Wally SW update

So there is a software update in the works (supposedly to be available late September, now ... October?).

Also the Tailgater is quite sensitive, need to experiment to be sure that it is pointing south and has line of sight to satellites. Get a smartephone/tablet app that aligns to the three satellites.

Found out that after selecting state and letting it find the switch locations you need to exit the scan when it has reached the full bar search. Then arrow key back to the top of the options (when passing the status) you'll see check marks for 2 or 3 satellites. Once at the top, hit the home key, then the back button, which causes the Wally to go to the next phase and acquire the satellite signals. Sometimes you get sound but not picture (good sign that you're getting close to three satellites).

Remember to unplug the Wally each time you tweak/reorient the tailgater, either five degrees east or west of your previous south location. After doing this a couple times and sometimes moving the tailgater on top of my RV, I have gotten three satellites. If you have the patience, you can find the three satellites!

Hope this helps. Benefit of the Wally is that the remote doesn't need line of sight to the receiver, where as the 211z does!

DishPointer AR Pro

Have any of you ever tried the DishPointer AR Pro?

I use it when I set up my Tailgater. It activates the camera and shows exactly what is between the Tailgaiter and the satellites. No guess work with that. You can find it at the App Store with your iPhone or iPad. I was told about it by a Dish Tech that I met years ago. He was the most knowledgeable tech I ever met from Dish. He said it wasn't free, I think I paid like $14 for it but he said it was worth it and I agree 100%.

I hope this will be helpful someone.

I have no need or desire for the Wally. However, after two years of frustrating attempts to get my Tailgater to properly deliver even one of three sats on a regular basis, I went to the Pathway X2 a year ago. Although pointing south is child's play, when you have two arcs to pick from and then utilizing the DishPointer Pro as a sight alignment tool, it has been fantastic. Even 4 hours north of the border in remote areas I have been able to get most if not all of my 250 channels with some patience and a bit of ingenuity as it relates to positioning.

That App in IOS is now $19.99 (and as stated this is the one the Dish support guys recommend).

For me, I was looking for a free one to try and found "Dish Align" by "Dayana Networks Ltd". Its one of those that has in in-app advertisements unless you upgrade (which I haven't done yet). Based on reviews at the App store it's highly rated.

Using the app is easy. You can mark Dish satellites as your favorite by looking in the provided satellite list for the one that says "119.0 West - Dish 110W, 119W, 129W". The list is sorted numeric so just scroll down to 119.0. There are four at 119.0 but its the fourth one that is labeled with all 3 you need. Click the star to the right and that makes it your favorite. From then on you have everything now set for doing alignments. Then you'll be presented with a satellite view of the location you are at. You can move the pointer around to pinpoint where you are standing. At that point it lays a line marker showing you which direction to point.

What does Dishpointer AR Pro have that this doesn't? AR pro shows you what's blocking your view. That may be worth the $20 all by itself.

There are a few screen shots of the free app in my blog post, just scroll down at this link (this forum only allows linked images otherwise I'd just insert here) Click Here for Roadtripper blog then scroll down

Have used it for years. It helped trying to get the Tailgater a maximum view. However, with the Pathway X2 it gives me a heck of starting point to then work my placement magic. I have put up the Pathway in dense forestation in SPs and Canadian Provincial Parks and the app has literally provided a window of opportunity for signal without having to guess which satellite is obstructed by what.

Just recently picked up a Pathway X2 and was trying it out this weekend with our 211k. I first tried it in a location with full view of the satellites and it worked like a charm. Next, I placed it where it had view of 61.5 and 72 but not 77 and this time I could see it find the two visible ones and struggle on 77 and then it just rotated to almost north and the receiver stalled on getting signal screen.

Just a bit nervous about relying on this, especially on one trip this summer where I know I won't have full visibility of all the satellites from the arc.

Having the same issue. Purchased the 211K and Pathway X2 back in July. Now staying in seasonal site through April. Have been unable to activate system to start using as I have only been able to locate 2 of the 3 satellites. I guess to initially activate the system you have to lock onto all 3. Guess I'll have to wait until I leave this CC and try when I get to Florida. Dish customer service, useless.

Paul....I am not sure what you mean by "relying on this" as a method for signal acquisition. Often a couple of inches of increased elevation or side to side can make all the difference in the world, even through tree canopies. I am tickled to death to get 2 of 3 in the Canadian Provincial Parks. And Scotty....to be best of my knowledge one does not need all three satellites on either arc to initialize the system. It could be the software of the 211K needs a major update or as I call it when online with DISH CHAT, a 'push' from their end. From time to time I have had issues where my receiver was not in sync due to inactivity and it took more than a few tries powering it up/down to finally get the needed results. As a disclaimer, I am not an electronics geek but I have had great success with my X2 in spite of glitches along the way. Some self-inflicted and others certainly related to DISH.

I meant relying on the X2 to receive service if it seems to freak out if it can't get all 3 satellites. In all fairness, I didn't give it much time, a couple minutes, after it said it's had fewer satellites found and to choose from the 3 options (View TV, Scan or Setup) after which I chose view.

We will be camping in the Smokies this summer and according to Dish pointer, our site only has visibility to 119,maybe 110 and definitely not 129. Eastern arc is out entirely from our side (elsewhere in the campground is fine)

Roger that. Totally understood now. Yep. I can tell you I have spent an hour or more on such folly hoping a couple reboots or scans do the trick until I physically move the X2 or submit to the View mode and accept whatever I can get. As far as the 129 goes, unless you are at the ocean or a wide open field, it is almost impossible at times. However, when I am working off the lower set, I get 77 more than I could ever get 129. I have really learned a lot from the Dish Pointer Pro. Not so much as to obstructions generally but really being able to dial into a 'thread the needle' opening in the canopy.
