I question why Dometic does not have recharge connections in their units? A high-side and a low-side connection would allow recharging. I'm not sure ANY OTHER air conditioning unit don't have recharge valves. The units in my cars, boat, truck all are rechargeable.
If my units ever fail, I will install valves in both sides, pump them down and fill them myself.

Perhaps the genny mod didn't work out as well as you thought?

If I had to guess, it would be for a couple of reasons. Since there is a warranty involved, this removes user tampering or dealer attempted repairs. There is a functional difference from refrigerant systems using R22. The newer R410a operates at almost double the head pressure than R22. To be precise, R22 operates at 260 psig where R410a runs at 418 psig on the high side. Low side pressures are 76 psig for R22 and 130 psig for the R410a. I can guess they don't want to chance a law suit from one of these things blowing up on someone trying to work on it. (For more info: The Essentials Of Working With R-410A) That is a generic article but an interesting read.

Just my .02

"blind"--Is your unit a Dometic 1500 BTU or different brand unit?
