Dometic fridge question

We have always plugged our TT up at home for a few days and let the fridge cool down. The night before we would load it up with our groceries and unplug it just before we pulled out. We usually only went 20 -30 minutes down the road where we usually camped. Next year we are planning a couple of trips 6 or 7 hour drive away. Will the refrigerator stay cold enough or do I need to run it on propane until we get to our destination?

Ah... Do a search on this subject and you will find it is a Great Debate.

We always run ours on propane while traveling. Usually too hot out here to do otherwise. Others folks claim the world will end if you do this So it's up to you to decide what you are comfortable with. Even in the winter we run down the road with the fridge on propane. Why risk food spoiling on long drive days?

Oh, yes. This is our process.

Hmm. You could. Why don't you just get frozen gel packs. That would be just fine for that until you fire it up at the end of day. Just like a big cooler.

BTW. If your home refrigerator goes out after its cooled to temp, as long as you don't open the doors the temps hold pretty well for a long time. I personally would not waste the fuel.

The amount of propane used by the fridge is minimal. A 20# tank should last about 6 weeks (depending on which study you read, some say 120 days) when on fridge only. Anyway, fridges don't use enough to worry about. And you are right, fridge will stay cold w/o power for awhile, depending on outside temp. Where we live, the 5ver can get up to 120 inside on travel day

Thanks for all the responses. Since it doesn't use that much propane, we will go ahead and run it . Thanks again!

Yep use the propane when ever we go into travel mode. It does not use much propane and you do not have to worry about food spoiling. Later RJD
