Question Dometic Refrigerator cooling fins

I notice a grey/white powder covering the cooling fins at the top back of the refrigerator compartment. I removed the plastic cover and cleaned with a sponge and dish soap.

Does anyone have experience cleaning this? I noticed the powder on the shelves and cleaned everything. Not sure if this is a type of mold, or ??

What is best to use to clean this? Is a bathroom cleaner safe to use on the metal fins?

It's not uncommon for aluminum to form a white oxidation layer. It really doesn't hurt anything unless it gets pretty thick.

To clean it off, you started off right by cleaning it with dish soap. Now take a lemon, cut it in half and dip it in a little salt, and gently scrub the fins. You can also use lemon juice on a rag to clean the fins. You can also use vinegar, but most people like lemons better.

"Bama Rambler" is correct in that it is an oxidation layer must like the brown rust we see on steel. The white powder is the bauxite that aluminum is made from. IF you empty the fridge after camping and leave it open to air out the moisture left on the aluminum fins will cause this white powder looking stuff to form. Yes, cleaning it will help prevent it. The lemon/salt is a good trick also.
