My best guess was a stuck sail switch.
How old is the unit?
Had they run out of propane?

The trailer is a three years old and the camper switched tanks. Then the furnace would not light back the next day

It can sometimes take many lighting cycles to purge the air from some appliances. Maybe it just took that long. Lighting all three stove burners probably helped.

You almost answered your own question. There was 'air in the lines'....
Everyone that has used a camper very much will know that when the 'propane' is shut off, air will creep into the lines. What 'we' then do when we want to get the Fridge ready to 'run on propane' when we drive down the road.... 'we' turn a burner or two on the stove to know when propane is to the fridge. Why?? because if no propane and the Fridge is trying to 'light', it will only spark to light for around 45 seconds and then shut off and show the 'light of death' on the fridge.... THEN 'we' turn on a stove burner and wait... and wait.... and then hold a lighter on the stove burner and watch the air in the lines blow the lighter flame around for a minute or two and then woooosh... sweet propane. Push fridge button and fridge lights after a couple of clicks...

Now, we can not stick our lighter down by the furnace burner and 'wait' and 'wait'... no, it must purge the air out at its' own pace. You said that it was 'trying' to light.... we also know that the 'fridge' tries to light and will not after awhile, same with furnace. Give it a few minutes and then try the furnace again... the furnace then comes on and the wife thinks 'I' fixed it and that I know what I am doing...(oh sorry, flash back from the last time we used the furnace....) Tell your friend the secret.... give it time to purge the air out....
