How to use rv antenna?

Okay forgive me, I'm new at this...we just purchased our Rv in April. Its a brand new 2012. I have no idea how to receive tv channels using our antenna. I tried toying with it when we were on vacation. I pushed the booster button, the light was on, and nothing. We have a fairly new tv, it's a digital flat screen HDTV. And yes, before you ask, the antenna was up. Lol
The reason I'm asking is because we're looking to park it permanently, but the campground we're interested in doesn't have cable. I'd like to know that we can use the antenna or else look into getting a satellite dish. I don't want to spend the money on a dish though if we can get enough channels thru the antenna. It shouldn't be that complicated. It's just that our other Rv didn't have an antenna, so I've never used one. I'm just wondering if there's something I'm missing. Thanks!

With digital TV's it's a lot more important to point your antenna. Check out this post from herk7769;

It will tell you where to point the antenna.

Don't forget to setup your TV for antenna rather than cable by using the setup function on the TV. Once set to antenna, you can search for available over the air channels.

And be sure to run the scan feature in the channel setup menu of your television after you set up the antenna and turn on the tv. Takes a few minutes. [EDIT: Sorry for the duplication, WEMig beat me to it.]

Wow. You guys are awesome. I'm not sure what I did or didn't do, but I will make sure I download this app and the ones you mentioned into my phone, as I have only wifi on my iPad. That way I can refer back to it later. I tried looking things up online, but could find nothing. I may even plug the trailer in so I can use the tv and play around with it here before our next trip. Television antenna up and down....I have a Remove Before Flight streamer that I hang on my antenna knob in the bedroom when the antenna is up. I have heard a few stories about them being up and taking out a tree limb. The campgrounds don't like it when you take out a limb or two. Last month when I went camping and my awning got destroyed, the couple two sites over had their sat. antenna fall over in the water. They then had their other antenna up...being frustrated because they had to move to a different spot, forgot to drop it down...took out a limb. Good info on the setups that have been mentioned.

On the subject of RV Antennas: I decide to put a ladder up today and look at my antenna. I found the rubber boot that the wire goes through was loose and half way up the wire. I sealed it back down...was just thinking about the rain we just had. While there I looked down the top and found a seal had popped loose. I never would have noticed it from the ground. Always looking for something that needs fixing.
