Letting The A/C Run
We are going on a trip this next weekend where we will be leaving the campground for a good share of the day for some sightseeing. Would it be best to shut the A/C off when we're not around the camper or do most people let it run. After seeing the video of the RV burning up at the cabelas parking lot has me slightly paranoid about leaving stuff on when there's no one around.

Personally, I turn it off but I have a smaller trailer and I found it doesn't take much to cool it down when we get back.

I leave mine on. If it's going to burn so be it...as long as no one is in it. I don't think you can constantly worry about what "might" happen. Enjoy while you can. JMHO

I leave mine run. I will turn the thing down so that it's not cold in there but not blazing hot either.

We leave the A/C on when we're gone, always have, never had a problem yet. We're on our third fifth wheel.

I would leave it on.
My nephew in phoenix turned the A/C off in his condo when he went on a short trip. He came home to exploded aerosol cans and it took almost 2 days for the place to cool off again.

Run it.
As said before, You will drive yourself absolutly bonkers if you start worrying about all the potential problems that might happen. I know I have camped out a hundred times, with probalby an average of 50 units at each campground, and I have never, not once seen a unit catch fire.
Have good insurance and quit looking for things to worry about.

I would leave it on. We leave ours on, but in the intense heat, our A/C has trouble keeping the camper cool, let alone cooling it off from 90+ degrees.

Yeah, set the thermostat to a reasonable temperature and leave it on.

Ditto - let it run. We've been RVing for over 10 years and have never had a problem. When we're in South Texas or the Texas Hill Country and the outdoor temperature is between 95 and 110...it's a no-brainer to leave the AC running.

What Lou said. When the beautiful SadieMae has to stay behind, the AC stays on. I left the AC on low setting when it heated up last weekend. I believe Sadie was quite happy in there.

May turn it up a few degrees, but we leave it on. What I do turn off is the water.

X2 whole heartedly! If the pooch is sightseeing with us, we've turned it off. If we leave him behind, we leave it on. If DW's chocolate melts, bad things happen, so it always stays in the fridge!

We are currently camping in Alburquerque, NM, with temps in the mid to upper 90s. Been out all day and it sure was nice coming back too a cool camper. We would have been miserable coming back to a hot box after being out all day.
Campground doesn't seem to mind if we leave it on, so my vote : leave it on.

I'm new to RV's/Trailers but if your trailer has breakers (not fuses), you might be able to upgrade the AC breaker to an AFCI (Arc Fault, Circuit Interrupter). These trip the power off when they detect a spark in the electrical.

We are currently camped out in Branson. We turn it off for 30 minutes a day to eat breakfast then in it goes for the day. If we were to turn it off it'd have to work a lot harder when we get back so why bother? So far no issues and no humidity in there either. It has a thermostat in it do only the fan runs all day.
