My question to those that know, I plan to bring along a directv receiver from home, a h21 model. Do I need to pick up a b band converter?
No B-band is converter needed - you can leave it behind. If I recall correctly it'll give you a message to disconnect B-band converter if you've moved it from the house where you were using one! You'll have to go through a complete new setup procedure. The Bband converter is used only for HiDef.

Thank you both! I've got the whole home DVD business at home, which has a different converter attached now.

I used to have the b band converters before installing the whole home service previously.

How much extra cable should I bring along - 50, 100 feet (eeek!)?

I'm pretty sure ours came with a 50' cable, and that has been enough for us.

I do use B-band converters in the TT because I have SWM on my home installation where B-bands are not required. X-2 on completely resetting the receiver to match the dish you are using.

As for cable.......well, I've been known to run 100 feet of cable from the campsite through the woods to a clearing to set up the dish. That was because we had a big gathering planned to watch a NASCAR race outside.
