Just a guess, drawing 30 amps for a period of time, maybe combined with a loose mechanical connection would cause the wire to heat up.

No, Never talked to the tech, the only thing i can think of is a power surge with my generator. I have been debating a surge protector but they are not cheap and come in many different varieties and sizes,,,,,,,,,,,
