LTE coming to all CARs via the OBD-II port

Have you folks seen this? Pretty cool for older vehicles. I imagine other carriers will be quick to jump on this.

Samsung Connect Auto brings LTE data to your car

I'm a little worried about my driving data in the cloud for big brother to see. The OBD-II port captures a good deal of information about your driving. Pair that with GPS/cell location and one's vehicle could easily be tracked.

I tend to tread on the conservative side when dealing with cybersecurity as I work in he field. I'm not a tin foil hat guy but I'm not fond of offerings like these.

Yep, GMC has Onstar installed but I disconnected it and I disable location services in Google settings. You can be tracked via cell tower triangulation but I'm less worried about the government and more concerned about businesses who use those services, get hacked and then data falling into the hands of organized crime. That's why there's so much concern over these data breaches.

I'll give an example. Your data is breached from a bank or retailer. Criminals end up with your data. Your location is apparent from your purchases and tracking data. Data is traded freely via IRC between criminals. Criminals go to your house and burglarize it.

What seems like innocuous data collection can have serious repercussions.

That's only if you log into google from your phone and never log out. However, on onstar, any car with it tracks you if its enabled or not. So does your smart phones if you have the location services turned on, and as for cars, every car is tracking you more then you know

My 'fear' isn't they have the info - and i doubt they'll do much with it. Lots of info out there for years on us all and more all the time (shopper cards, online shopping, using debit cards, etc).

My concern is i just happen to be the same place as someone being watched - church, bowling league, the bar every thursday evening, etc and that data is interpreted to say i'm meeting with this guy..now i'm on a watchlist and have no clue why or how.

And my android phone will often tell me 'x minutes to work based on current traffic'...and no, i never told google that I have a job or where it is. It just figured that out all by itself. (i work from home, self employed, except i help doing tax returns this time of year).

Now that is scary stuff.

bak,
The government isn't so much more secure. The OPM loss comes to mind.

Agreed. In fact, .gov is probably even less secure when it comes to data. I'm talking about gov employees tracking our movements.

you can already make a hotspot with many phones, why would you pay for another device to do so?

Onstar, whether activated or not, sends data regardless. You have to either pull the fuse or if you are really concerned you can unplug the module. The module also does the Bluetooth so you would lose that too. The module is called VCIM and on trucks is in the dash below the infotainment. It will have 3 plugs, a Bluetooth antenna, and a GPS antenna plug.
I know a bit about it because I just replaced one in our Yukon Denali. Personally I like the feature. I'm able to lock/unlock, remote start, activate horn/lights, check fuel level/range, check tire pressure and check oil change life left all from the Onstar APP on my phone.

As far as new cars with their own hotspot, I like the idea. We have 2 kids with Kindles and laptops. The Internet available to them can make our ride more enjoyable and they can get school work done.

I pulled the fuse. It gives me peace of mine knowing that's one less way to be tracked.

The auto mfgs are counting on people wanting traffic, live weather, etc on the display screen. Yes this could probably be hacked to use your mobile phone HS but they wouldn't get a cut of the MVNO revenue that way...

My Silverado is a hotspot through Onstar and My ATT acct. I use my IPad or my smartphone Copilot GPS maps with a more stable LTE connection. Also use Pandora on a more stable connection.
