Need emergency help with AC
Brother in law just showed up at camp with a dometic AC that's not cooling. Fan runs fine but the compressor won't kick over. It's 87 in his trailer right now.
Any ideas?

Yep, it's the digital one, so fan speed on auto, set to cool, temp set to 70.

I'd be willing to bet, thermostat or control box has issues. Been through that twice with these new units. Hate them.

Thanks, he's planning to call the dealer tomorrow morning but we were hoping for some of that age old wisdom like "oh, yeah, there's such and such fuse".
I'll keep you up to date on how it goes. After we make up the spare beds to accommodate his family tonight.

Do you hear the compressor trying to start? Prob sound like a grunt for a few seconds then trip out on overload then repeat after 20-30 seconds??

Low voltage could be one reason the compressor will not start.

Considering the absolute storm that is hitting SW Ontario I would say staying away from AC Power would be a god idea tonight!

Yeah, it hit us out of the blue. Got him convinced on the OldCoot poles though. My awning held firm, he was hanging from his (literally) trying to get my sister in law back to retract it.
Bonus though, the storm cooled everything off so the AC not working is no longer an emergency.

Dometic and Colman both will not handle a voltage drop very well. The end result of a voltage drop would be a burnt capacitor and or a control board.
I have posted pictures of this kind of damage a few years a go form work.
I worked at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center in Chantilly VA.we had 5 park booths we Dometic roof top units on them and we had to replace all 5 of with in the first 6 years because of this problem.
Dometic has a commercial type which we bought for one of the last replacement and as far as I know it is still in operation....I left the Museum 3 years ago.

Update: the dealer won't be able to look at it until later this week, so it looks like they're S-O-L for the rest of this weekend.

If the compressor is hot it will go off on internal over load. Shut the unit off for a few hrs. to let it cool down and reset internally, Then try it again. It sounds like he might need a hard start kit, it's not kicking out of the start wind. Another way is to take hose on the roof and run water over it until it's cold. You would need to expose the compressor to do that.

If it kicked off for a hot compressor, it would restart itself. The compressors use a bi-metal switch which automatically closes the switch when it cools.
Electronics, however, can sometimes get hung up in a step and need a reset. In order to do that, you need to remove all power from the unit for about 5 minutes. Some units have 120 VAC and 12 VDC running to them. Simply turning off the breaker will not do it because that only removes the 120 VAC. You will need to pull a fuse also. Another way to do it would be to pull the plug going into the control board in the AC unit after you turn off the 120 VAC breaker to it. Hope they get cool soon!

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner. Just got a call from the BIL. Dealer said it was the control box. $300 for it to be fixed.
