Newbie A/C Help Please -Dometic Brisk II 15k

Having a problem with our Dometic A/C.

It seems to be blowing only cool air now, not ice cold like it was our last trip out.

Now, the temps in Texas have warmed up and humidity is up as well. We got to the campsite around noon and the inside of the trailer was hot (around 90). So we set the A/C to 72, fan on auto and opened the quick cool dump vent then went to the store for supplies. When we got back, the inside of the trailer was still hot and the ac unit was running fan on high but not blowing cold. Occasionally little ice chunks would spit from the return side.

So I opened up the filter intake and looked up and touched the evaporator coil it was also not cold. I could see condensation dripping from the roof gutter outside like normal operation.

Jumped on the forum and searched.

-I reset circuit breakers, ran on fan only hi setting, then switched back to cool, same results - no cold air.

-I taped up the gaps in the divider with A/c foil tape, thinking that the cold air was leaking to the uptake - no improvement.

So next morning, temps fell to upper 60's outside and the ac unit seemed to finally catch up. I used my digital thermometer that has inside temp and a remote temp sensor for outside. I hung the outside temp sensor from the nearest duct register:

At duct - 68 degrees

In RV - 72 degrees

This next day was overcast and only got to about 80 but the temps in the RV steadily increased by the time we left:

At duct - 73 degrees

In RV - 79 degrees

Thermostat setting - 72

Is this normal?

Is there anything I'm missing or should I schedule a dealer visit?

Help

To me it sounds like the unit is low of freon.

I've learned that these rooftop a/c are sealed (no fill ports), so this means my a/c needs replacement?

Anyone have a similar problem? Hoping I don't have to take it to the dealer...

Dometic has acknowledged that some of the units they delivered in recent years, can have corrosion which causes a leak. Call the dealer, as they have extended the warranty and replace it.

I would see the dealer. Those ac's have a two year warranty. Ours failed 6 weeks before it expired.

Mine quit cooling within a month of being new. My dealer didn't want me to bring in back until he made sure he had a replacement as he didn't want the trailer left there. He had a replacement in stock and when I took it in to the dealer I was there only 2 hours and then gone again.

Thanks for the responses guys. I hope my dealer will be as accommodating. I'd hate to have the RV sit at the dealer for weeks/months - not being used.

The fact that you say that little "ice chunks" were spitting out, almost makes me think that the coil was froze up. If you're making ice, it's getting cold. Could still be the refrigerant.

I thought the same. But even during ice chunks the evaporator was not cold to the touch and the freeze sensor was in the correct place on the fins??

I started the a/c the next morning in storage and same result, only cool air.

My 2015 RV was built 6/2014 and I took new delivery on 2/2016.

Do you know of a model/serial number range or could point to the thread on this subject? Thanks!

With domestic, there are independent factory authorized repair facilities if getting in and out at your friendly neighborhood FR dealer is an issue. One of the biggest nicest facilities in our area is an independent, factory authorized by most brands, but not FR itself. Pricey I hear for non warranty, but faster than the dealer's service I keep reading about here.

Your A/C unit should be repairable

even if it did lose charge. A good A/C repair facility that works on hermetic A/C systems would likely look for sign of refrigerant leak, check icing switch for correct operation and may decide to open the system and installing service ports. OEM manufacturers have omitted service ports to reduce cost and eliminate a common leak source but there should not be any major component they cannot replace in the event of a leak and once a leak is repaired the system can be re-charged and re-sealed. The only other thing that could get to you preventing repair would be pure economics, if it is cheaper to replace than repair. Condenser coil, evap coil and compressor are expensive but it still might be economically feasible to repair the system.

On my Puma 2016 the Dometic Brisk Air quit after 6 months. The repair facility said the Dometic's are a complete replace only.

Dealer has the Dometic units in stock and is aware of the issue. I'm taking the trailer in tonight.

Hoping they can fix it in 3 weeks before our summer trip...

I will post when I find out more.

Thanks for everyones input!

Ask dealer to give you a scheduled repair date. Bring it in that day and take it that evening. It is a 2hr job. No sense your unit sit on their lot for 3 weeks.

X2, Our unit went out after only 4 short RV trips. You could see signs of refrigerant leak across the roof. Authorized Dometic RV service changed ours in about 1 hour while we waited. Warranty will not start over, it will still only be 2yrs. from your purchase date. Dometic sent us an offer to extend the warranty for two or three more years for around $110.00.
Good luck with your repairs.

Update.

Dealer looked at my unit yesterday (only because it was easier as I dropped it off in front of the repair bays after hours). Indeed, they said the A/C was bad and will be warrantied. They don't have my particular model in stock but said that it should arrive from Indiana by way of the Dallas warehouse between 17-19 May.

They say it should be fixed by our trip scheduled for 3 June. Fingers crossed

Update.

Got our RV back yesterday. A/C has been replaced and blowing cold! Dometic sent a unit with a black exterior cover, but dealer replaced with original white. Covered under warranty, total cost $0.

Just glad we got it back before our trip!
