Newby asking about satellite TV

We new Rockwood 8310 owners (new to the RV world) have Direct TV at home, and are interested in having it with us when we are on the road, but have no idea how to proceed. I've heard a few general comments that RV dealers can set up a rather expensive satellite system....while others use their Direct box from home, with some sort of antenna on, or set up beside, the trailer. We are old folks, and not technically talented. Recommendations? How do we go about aiming at a satellite? All info will be appreciated. Thanks, Cadiz Couple

I used my Direct TV from home for years with a potable antenna on a tripod connected into my outside antenna connection. I used a handheld satellite finder to locate the best reception. TV is no longer that important to me so I no longer have satellite or the gear that goes with it. If I want TV I run up my TT antenna and find a station or watch a dvd

Two choices, one easy and expensive. The other cheap and time consuming.
easy is a winegard Travler roof mounted. But it will not work if there are trees blocking your site line.
cheap is a tripod mounted ground antenna. With the proper tools the ground based is by far your best choice as its flexability should allow you to locate satellites most places.

Call em.

Need a portable dish like yours at home, tripod to set it on, and for HD need slimline dish, SwM module, and SwM power inserter (looks like a splitter)...and good RG6 cable to connect it all.

And a good tv.....

We use a King Flex portable automatic thing......bought a receiver off ebay, and as we have Direct at home, cost is $6.00 per month....if wanting to use outside tv on a different channel then the one inside, bring a receiver from home......the flex will support 2 tv receivers

I've had 2 roof mounted Winegards for my 2 Direct TV boxes. One was on my Country Coach and now on my Cardinal 5er. We wouldn't be without one and get all my HD channels as well.
Mine was $1800 plus $350 install by a specialty guy in Lake Havasu.

We are new to camping, as well. We were about to invest a lot ($2K) into a satellite dish for the roof after our first comparing trip but the salesman talked us into going with the $500 Wineguard G2+. I brought it home, set it on the ground, plugged it into one of our DirecTV boxes from inside the house and had TV. It's that simple.
I did purchase a tripod later but it's not necessary.

Yes, but isn't the Wineguard G2+ just standard definition with DirecTV? It is my understanding that it cannot pick up the HD (high definition) signal. I put the more expensive Wineguard trav'ler high definition system up on my Class C roof so I could get the HD signal, but if I had it to do over again I would go with a less expensive setup.

There's another connector that the cord is covering up....so if flex is mounted on pin, I use the F connector, and when on ladder, use the hidden one marked R....also have a shelf for the receiver box to sit on same rail as this Click image for larger version

True if you use the G2 for DirecTV it is SD only. However, if you connect it to a good TV then the TV will upconvert the signal to a very good picture quality.

The G2 can also accommodate DISH SD and HD. So you could use it with their Pay as you Go plan, only paying for the months that you use it, and get HD that way.

And, if you are in the forest you will be glad you got the portable unit instead of a roof top model for sure. The G2 comes with a 50 foot cable and I have needed every bit of distance on several occasions.
