On our new 12 Flagstaff 8528RKWS I had to get a ladder and pry it open. Never closed it and have towed over 4,000 miles with no problem.

At least you noticed that it needed to be opened. Many of us hadn't! You might post a picture so we know for sure what yours looks like. There are probably two little tabs on the bottom. You need to pry those up (takes a LOT of force) and then it will open. The usual advice is to close before travel.

OC's Range hood vent-------------------

Now I know why Ole Coot does not close his range hood door! If I was standing in the hole he stands in, I would never close mine either.

Agree, but I'm not going to get a ladder out every time to open it and then close it and it does no harm to leave it open.

I use my awning hook to flip the tabs, no ladder needed, I also close for travel just to keep the dust out

Wink

I fixed all that by buying a camper that doesn't have an external vent. Now I can just stew in my own food odors which the DW think is better than the other odors I produce

My Hengs Flapper fell off. Looking at my part's catalog, a replacement is about $10. I just noticed it yesterday, so off to the RV shop tomorrow.

Vertically challenged is right, but I haven't folded the handrail over into the awning arm.
Plus, I don't bump my head on things like you do.

This is off the original topic, but if you have a Heng's range hood vent, you may as well buy several of the flaps. The design is junk. There's one on our coach and I have replaced it at least four times. The hinge pins are way too small and break even when the locking tabs are engaged if there's a strong crosswind, which will buffet the coach and break the pins. Some later FR products have a vent from a different manufacturer.

I modified ours with a steel rod for a hinge pin, but there was a post of a different modification using small hinges that may be easier to do.

Many thanks. I am going to get a new setup and modify it. FR caulked the outer cover and I broke it a bit trying to pry and cut the caulking.

That's what we learned after a couple of tries. The tabs are a little difficult to push up but it can be done.

I agree it could have been better designed.

That's why I leave it open. It doesn't let dust in like someone posted and is completely enclosed and won't blow off.

Actually doing work on campers is a learning experience. When I was younger, just bought old ones and Junked them after a few years.

Well, went to change my flapper and cracked the main unit. Got a whole unit and found that I need to pick up butyl tape.

Well FR caulked the outside cover. Shouldn't the inside just be caulk sealed so that the cover can be lifted to just in case the flapper breaks again?

Old Coot, good things come in small packages. But then again, so does dynamite!
