RECALL Subject : Risk of Fire due to Contact with Heating Element

Received notice today from US DOT NHTSA of the following recall of 2014 Rockwood and Flagstaff RV's for the "chill chaser" option.

NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V080000

The notice I received is an email notice from US DOT not from Forest River.

Excellent post.

To be fair, there usually is some time between the release of the recall directive and the notifications in order to develop a plan of correction and get in any needed parts and/or develop mitigation procedures. (Like ordering the millions of GM ignition switches).

The notifications were to begin on 9 March 2015 per the directive.

The only "chill chaser" I can find reference to in Forest River literature is on the second AC unit.

Not making a judgement, only stating my source.

My last TT had a chill chaser and it was a small heating element in the AC. Name was designed to imply it was not a living space heater, but rather a chill chaser to run in am to take chill ( not cold) off. The CC in my unit was recalled as well.

Took delivery of our unit last September and received a call from the dealer after having it only a couple of weeks not to use the CC on the A/C in the bedroom.

I looked at it and saw no issues, and the dealer checked it recently as well and found no problems. The recall mentions only 2014 model year units, ours is a 2015 but would have been built in the time span they list.

The dealer did say they did have one unit that started smoking immediately while they were testing prior to delivery, so its a real problem on some A/C's with the CC.

If you look at the NHTSA "Associated Documents," the RCRIT-15V080-7311.pdf "Remedy Instructions and TSB" document has pictures of the heating element and the repair criteria. Looks to be simple.

Dumb question
Does this recall apply to only the models mentioned above?

"certain model year 2014 Rockwood and Flagstaff recreational vehicles manufactured June 26, 2014, to October 9, 2014, and equipped with the Chill Chaser option"

Mines a 2015 but was manufactured during those dates.
I imagine they have a range of VIN's they are checking for the possibility of the problem. If you are listed as an owner you should be contacted by the selling dealer (at least I was).

The pdf Narboza posted has pics of what they are looking for, if you want to check your rig. If you fall into the manufactured range, I'd have a dealer check it though.
Basically its to make sure no wiring or foam insulation can get close to the "Chill Chaser" heating element and cause a fire.

How does FR handle these recalls? Can you take your trailer to any FR dealer? If you didn't buy locally, can the local dealer refuse to take care of the recall the same way some refuse to do warranty work?

If you have a chill chaser, no matter what model you have, a simple inspection would be worth it. The copper colored rod in the pic is the heating element. Just check to make sure that there are no wires, insulation or other items that are near or can touch the rod.

Would be faster to do it yourself than it would be to even hook up.

Definitely agree for this one if what's in the picture is all that's involved. But what about something like a gas appliance part replacement where most owners have no choice?

Whole different problem from the one stated.

Re-read my post, OC. I'm wondering how they generally handle recalls, not just this specific one.

If you read the NHTSA website, you will find the OP copied the information correctly.
