Refrigerator

When I am driving, can I leave the main power switch on and allow the refrigerator to run on propane? If so, how fast will it drain the propane tank?

Maybe if you drive coast to coast. They don't use that much. Cooking, hot water and heat all use more.

Are you sure about that? Hundred of posts on this forum say otherwise.

I leave mine on never a problem. Some people just pack Ice chest and when they get to where they are going put in refrigerator after. it will keep cold for several hours with it off also. It is ok to leave on except in most tunnels you need to turn off the propane tanks and some tunnels it not allowed to have propane tanks at all. As far as it being Illegal Never read any laws about that. I always check laws for most states I travel thru regarding RV's .

The only law I know of concerning running propane is some tunnels will tell you to shut them off while traversing the tunnel, and during re-fueling.

On that note, it is fine to leave it on propane while driving. I do it all the time. Should the wind blow the flame out (I have never had that happen to me) the thermocouple will shut the propane flow off.

my fridge keeps items cold for up to 4-5 hrs. after that some items could be lost. as stated, many here use their propane for short or long distances with no issues.

Refrigerator

I put two or three gallon jugs of frozen water, mixed with rock salt, in the refrigerator to cool the refrigerator down. I put some food in igloos. We buy most of that kind of food when we are near our destination.

I was told by a CHP officer it is illegal to operate a vehicle on a highway with an open flame.

Have a California code book nowhere does it say it is Illegal to. Look it up CHP officers can be wrong they don't remember all the laws.

This is false information.
Only a few tunnels back East, have such restrictions.

The vast majority of RV owners travel with the propane ON.
