Satellite dish

What kind would you recommend and what Carrier do you use and how expensive is your carrier and do you pay for it all year long or do you just pay for it in the spring/ summer when you go camping.

We have dish network at home . So I take my receiver from my shop with us so there's no additional cost .
I also got a free dish from an installer whom had removed it from a house.
I mounted it on a work light tripod .
I'll post pics.

If you don't have a dish service you can get pay as you go from dish network bbut you have to buy the equipment.

We have Direct TV and do the same as Turbs...... we bought a used dish from a TV Service place..... $25.00 so it wasn't a huge amount of money. It is #3 on DH's set up..... electric, water & satellite!!! We have always found signal!

I refuse to do cable ---------

I flat refuse to have cable at home. I use direct TV. I have nearly every thing they have (just about). I use a very good meter for set up for signal (use to be in business). I simply just take a receiver from home with me when we travel. I get all my local channels up to about 235 mile away, after that no more local channels.

NO HIGH DEF!

Torbo:

I now have a spare Dish Network dish and have been impressed by your mounting system. Thinking about doing something similar Do you have any issues with the wind? What device do you use to find the satellites?

Bill,
I drilled holes in the three legs and push stakes through them into the ground.
So no wind issues .
As far as aiming I use a couple of apps for my android "also available for I-pad or I-phone to get a good general location.

Basically they use your camera screen and as you hold your phone up to the sky the app overlays the satellite s in your screen to see location.

I'll post apps and do a screen shot.

Once you get it aimed as suggested, you need a signal strength meter to actually find the "birds". Trust me...you can't do that with the indications on the receiver. I like this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002FX...sr=8-1&pi=SL75
but you can get them elsewhere, including Radio Shack.

Ok. Some of the super-humans on this forum can do it. Heck, I've done it, but it's the most frustrating thing I've done in a very long time. Buy the meter.

(As someone said somewhere else: Just because you have 20 years experience doing something and can do it safely, that doesn't mean that you should recommend it to someone with less experience.)
