Soft start for A/C

Considering a soft start for A/C. Is the Micro Air easy start worth $300 vs $40 for a soft start capacitor for compressor motor?

In my opinion, it depends on the A/C age to judge whether a soft start capacitor is even needed. When I last spoke with Dometic they said their recent models have that need already in the stock models. Not so for older units say pre-2005.

As for the Microair, that's a whole other animal. It is a microprocessor that manages the startups and recycles to control power demands. There are many cases where a 13.5 A/C can start and run with only a Honda 2200 generator. Check out their youtubes or just do a Google for microair Honda 2000.

Now whether it's worth $300 is subjective and depends if you will be running your A/C off shore power and dont want a larger generator. If you mostly camp with elec hookups then for you maybe not.

I can attest to the micro air... we successfully run on our EU2000... but another added bonus is the ability to run on just a 20A receptacle.

We spent just over a week at Kring Point State Park on the St. Lawrence Seaway... peninsula site with 20A electric only... ran a/c without issue for a week of 85-90 degree days... no issues. It really does work as described.

Depends on how you camp... YMMV

From their website:

Will EasyStart void my compressor warranty?
Some RV owners worry that their installation of an EasyStart 364 might in some way void the manufacturer’s warranty on their rooftop AC unit’s compressor motor. Legally, it shouldn’t. But you never know what a manufacturer might assert. Micro-Air is quite confident that its product cannot damage your compressor. We do recommend that if you have a potential warranty issue that you consider removing EasyStart to avoid any issues related to its installation. We do offer an Extended Warranty

I’m my experience...any modification can void the warranty. It’s usually at the discretion of the person(s) reviewing the warranty.

Airxcel had a seminar session at the International Rally last week that I attended. They had a couple of reps giving info on maintaining the Coleman-Mach AC units.

I asked the rep point blank - "Does installing a Micro-Air Easy Start void the AC warranty? He gave a concise answer - "No."

FWIW, it is my understanding that Airxcel actually installs a version of the Easy Start in some lines of their AC units.

I just checked the Micro-Air site and they are offering a Springtime discount of $30.00.

I installed one each on my 15k and 13.5k units and while plugged into a 30a outlet, both units run along with a residential fridge and interior lights.

Installed this on a 1500 btu unit and ran a briggs and Stratton p-3000 inverter generator with no problems. save yourself a few bucks, easy plug & play install also. worth a try at this price. worked for me!
