I installed a surge protector and mounted the display above the fridge. when I cut into the panel I see all this unused room. This space also vents the fridge.
do you think its safe to make a cabinet for this space or should I seal it back up.
If you just block off from the back of the refrigerator box itself, NOT THE FINS, ETC. so the air can vent off the fins and coils, you should be ok to use that space as storage. I would suggest adding 2 computer fans at the bottom (just above the burner) that blow air up across all the tubing, fins, etc and out the top. If the outlet is on the side, fabricate a smooth alum sheet metal curve to direct the air out the side.

not seeing what you see but if it was closed before you cut into it - one would think it would not harm the space if you made a cabinet. you could always design a small vent grate in the side if it was open before...
