starting up old propane systems

I am brand new to RV universe. Purchased 77 Prowler. Want to safely begin using duotherm heater. Do I need to light a pilot? Thermostat is on cabinet in front end sleeping area. Blower fan comes on automatically. I know to open gas valve at tank and turn up thermostat. What else do I need to know and do? Plugged into shore power. Thanks a million! Paul
