They like to keep a close eye on the average person if you let them away with avoiding taxes they get into the same habit as the rich and not want to pay any. We get a limit and if I were to just go over and shop for it I would be required to pay tax on the purchase price, even on the taxes I had paid in the state I purchased it in.

Probably won't.... however.....
These people are very good at detecting dishonest answers and the grief that you'll encounter when they suspect you're not being honest...
It's not worth it for a few dollars if any duty... 
I bought my EMS from Tweetys and had it shipped to Sweetgrass. Drove across then declared it along with 24 Buds and was told to have a nice day... No duty for a 20 minute visit...

Still do not understand how could they tell what you left Canada with installed already and what you came back with. how would they know you added a EMS system? Just wondering?

They don't know , but sometimes I wonder if they have built in lie detectors installed in them when they get the job!!!

I got bent over pretty hard once.
I ordered a fuel injected crate engine from jegs.
I expected to pay the 15% tax on the engine. Fine.
Then they told me the shipping charges were taxable as well!
