Update and further info on my therostat improvement. I found placing the insulation over the quarter sized hole and between the thermostat and the wall did help decrease the time for the thermostat from an 8 degree variance to about 5-6 degrees but I still was not completely happy. The back of the thermostat has a loose flimsy white paper type that covers the electronics (see photo 1). Not sure if it actually does anything except protect the electronics but I figured the room air needed to get into the thermostat better in order for it to work better. So I cut out a section of my insulator so room air could get back there easier while still covering the hole in the wall where heat was (photo 2). Photo 3 shows black electrician tape holding together the precut punchout pieces for the outlet insulator I used. Photo 4 shows the air gap after replacing the thermostat on the wall. Now, heater turns on when temp drops 3-4 degrees from my setting, much better than the original 8 degree drop. Not perfect but much better. (NOTE: photos rotated 90 degrees by my accident. Sorry!)
