Tips on LED lights?

Hello,

Can anyone offer some tips on which LED lights to purchase? I would like to mount them to my awning like people do.

I notice some have 100 and others have 300. What do people normally buy? Not looking to light up a landing strip.

I take it waterproof is the way to go?

I see RGB and RGBW. Do these blend to make other colors or do they just cycle around?

Anything else I should look for? Been looking on Amazon for a better quality LED strip. Not looking ot buy a cheap one and have the LED's start burning out.

Thanks,

Vin.

We liked the blue I got from Amazon but it's a matter of choice. The multi- colored ones you can make them flash, rotate, dim, do almost anything. The main thing make sure and order some 3m 2 sided molding tape because the stuff on the lights didn't stick good also wipe the spot your applying the lights to with alcohol to make sure no wax or dirt are there when you apply, let it dry good too. I got 2 rolls of the blue for $9 on Amazon 2nd summer still working. Make sure you have a dimmer function because they are real bright.

Thanks Mark,

I was holding off my replies to see if anyone else wanted to comment.

Good advice on the dimmer switch. I did not think of looking for that function. The changing of the colors would be nice if it is slow. I am not looking to make a disco or cinema function with chasing lights or blinking lights. I think it would look nice if the lights slowly changed color through out the night.

Thanks,

Vin.

There are two types of multicolored lights. One has individual led's of different colors and one has a single chips with 3 led's. The style with the 3 colors in one chip will give you more uniform colors. I have the one with each chip is a single color that came with remote so they will chase, fade and you can make your RV look like a disco hall. we tend to use only the blue color and dim it down. One thing to do is seal the ends of the lights with silicon, the end are not sealed from the factory and you will probably have to cut them to length any way.

Is one set up better than the other?

Just thinking aloud here. If I have three colors on one LED chip and that LED chip goes out, then the whole thing is out. But if I have three separate single color LED chips and red chip goes out, then I still have blue and green. No? This seems to be preferable.

Thoughts?

Is there an industry term that I should look for that confirms the difference above? Or does one have to look into the spec sheets? Sometimes the Amazon specs are not that specific.

Vin.

I believe you will find the 5050 (this refers to the size of the chip 5.0mm X 5.0mm) have the 3 lights in one chip while the 3528 are single color. with the single leds if you loose 1 color the other two will work, I have this on my lights I have lost a couple of green leds but still have all my red and blue.

Always get waterproof when installing under coach a little rtv on edges will keep it in place
