Transfer hard drive from house to RV?
Anyone know if I can hook up a hard drive to my house Hopper then use it with my trailer Wally or 211z to watch my house recorded shows?

I'm no pro, and I have Direct TV not Dish. It seems like it should work. However I'm not sure if it needs some sort of service once inside from a satellite connection before it will fully fire up. Won't hurt to try.

I sent an email to Dish and they replied that you cannot do what I want to do. They say it won't work to transfer my recorded shows on my home Hopper to a portable hard drive then access those shows on my RV Wally or 211z. Bummer! Dish said I could only take my recordings on the road by using a device called a HopperGo. This allows me to take 100 hours of my recorded shows with me and watch them on my iphone or ipad. I was hopping someone in RV land had tried and been successful using a hard drive. Am interested in the results if anyone has tried this.

I asked Dish the same question and was told no also. They did say I could take the Hopper with me in the RV and connect it to the television via the HDMI cable without being connected to the satellite. That way you could watch anything that was already recorded on the Hopper but would loose the capability to record anything while you were away.
There is also a way to connect a hard drive to the 211 receiver and use it as a recording media but you cannot record and watch two different shows at the same time as the 211 only has one tuner.

In order to watch shows recorded on an external hard drive with a Wally or 211 they must be recorded using the Wally or 211.

Important Facts
The external hard drive must be reformatted if it is swapped to a different account, which will cause all DVR recordings to be deleted. You can swap the external hard drive between like receivers (DVR model to DVR model or non-DVR model to non-DVR model) on the same account without losing DVR recordings.
I move my External Hard drive between my 211k to 211z and have also moved it to my Hopper with sling in my brick and mortar. When I called, to ask, the CSA said as long as on the same account, it should work unless there is a firmware difference or upgrade needed. I now have been doing it for over a year with never an issue.

Looks like I won't be able to go from a DVR (Hopper) to a non DVR (Wally). I think my solution will be to have my Wally hooked up for a couple weeks and record shows then transfer it to my RV. I hate having to watch what seems like 15 minutes of commercials for a one hour show. I also just want to have a backup supply I can watch in case of bad weather, interfering trees, etc.

I think it literally is 15 minutes of commercials. I've downloaded shows from On-demand with my Direct TV DVR and they are typically around 45 or 46 minutes long because they take out all the commercials.

Yep... We hate commercials also. Seems like 15 minutes per hour for major networks and 20 minutes for others. We rarely watch anything live anymore just so we can avoid the ridiculousness

What's even worse is showing the same commercials repeatedly DURING THE SAME SHOW.
