Contact your congressman NOW (about 6 months in advance is best) to get White House & Capitol tour tickets. We contacted our House of Rep for our district
The Washington Monument also requires tickets. I do not remember if you can get them thru your congressman as well. I think it may have been the Reserve America website for those.

Traffic around DC and I85 in northern Virginia is HORRIBLE and even worse when towing.

We camped at Aquia Pines Aquia Pines No complaints but felt it was a little too far away.

You cold always stay on outskirts and take rail or subway in. Then you would not have to worry about parking or the headache of traffic during that time. Any time I go into dc I get on subway outside of Rockville md and ride in. Last time we did it sat parking was free. Don't know of you can park rv there.

DC area camping

When we visit our grandkids in Alexandria Va. we stay at Pohick Bay Regional Park campground. Find them on the web. It is south of DC at Lorton Va. and has a very rural setting. Not all sites are full hookup. We have always been pleased with everything there and have met folks from ALL over. The Springfield Metro stop is only a few miles away (blue line). Just another option.
