Janes Island SP in Maryland, on the Chesapeake Bay near Crisfield. Great kayaking, birding, and fishing.
French Creek SP in PA.
Martinek SP also on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

I didn't mention it, but Point Lookout SP in Scotland, MD has GREAT campground right on the water (Green's Point) that has limited services (electric only), but does have water close and a dump station within the park. It has a nice bath house. Malone loop has no services, but some sites are also on the water. Tulip Loop is their FHU site, but it is not on the water. The sites are private and the entire SP is out in the middle of nowhere. The park is on the point of land where the Potomac reaches the Chesapeake. The pier is on the Bay. There is lots of canoeing, kayaking and other water sports available for a fee at the Nature Center.

State Parks in NY & MD

Besides those already mentioned:

Deep Creek State Park, Elk Neck SP, Rocky Gap SP, and Greenbrier State Park in MD.

Letchworth State Park (Grand Canyon of the East), Watkins Glen SP (near the Finger Lakes) and Wellesley Island SP (near the Thousand Islands) in NY.

Watkins Glen and Wellesley Island were our favorites.

X2 on that recommendation. Often the beach parks are full in peak season. A bit off the Banks on Roanoke Island is The Refuge in Wanchese. Pool and good facilities and about 5 miles from the Nags Head pier & Atlantic Beaches. Direct access for kayaks/canoes & other shoal draft boats to the Sound side and some nice paddling.

My favorite place. We are 16 miles from it, so we go there 12-15 times a year.

With the choices mentions, the Finger Lakes area would be my pick. The KOA in Watkins Glen is amazing. Corning is a beautiful town to visit.

Peaceful, relaxing, and inexpensive

Peaceful, relaxing, and inexpensive. The wife and I love to go to North Bend Campground run by the Corps of Engineers on Kerr Dam (Buggs Island). Most all of the sites on this beautiful 50,000 acre lake have 50 amp, water and great dump stations. Cost only $26 a night or $13 if you have the senior pass. The views are fantastic, nice beaches, great vews, no development on the lake and sometimes you can get a site that you can’t even see your neighbors. They have some drive up sites but reservations fill fast and you can only do them within six months. Two weeks maximum stay time. The Corps of Engineers has wonderful camping all over the country. I think we make reseverstions on Reserve America.

If you want to get away from the crowd try West Virginia. Romney is not that far from you. The Potomac River with canoe rental and scenic train rides are there. There are many day trips that you can take including Smokehole Caverns, Seneca Rocks and the Dolly Sods area, or just stay in the campground and relax. We use Wapocoma Campground, right on the river with full hook up sites. Probably takes me longer to get there than it you, and I live in WV.
