In Portland Maine do you use 95 or 295 to go around it?

And I'm assuming the quickest way from there is to take 95 to 395 to 1A versus getting on 1 in Brunswick and drive along the coast. We have a long haul from PA so I'm looking for the quickest not the most scenic.

Thanks. Yep we plan on using our ez pass.

Next is to map out some refueling spots along the way. Not too many Pilot Flying J locations in New England so I can use my Good Sam discount (only a couple of cents a gallon but usually good locations for in and with a big trailer. Did find one in Sturbridge MA.

We are planning to go there in Fall of 2018 and stay at Schoodic point Campground. We prefer federal/ state parks. We want trees/ shrubs between sites and not packed in light sardines.

Make sure you get an EZ Pass transponder that is programmed for the total number of axles you have with the camper attached. I have 2 transponders in my truck, one to use with the camper and one without. I just swap them out as needed. Keep the one you aren't using in a mylar bag so it's not accidentally scanned by the overhead readers.

I've been using my ez pass the past four years with my old trailer with no issues. I don't think two ez passes are necessary.

Then you have been underpaying your tolls. Your regular transponder will only bill you for the tolls for your TV only, it does not account for the trailer.

No he hasn't, at least not in PA, but I can't see how its any different in any other state. If that was the case I would need a different transponder to use it in a different state and the network of 16 states where EZ pass is accepted would not be a network.

The number of axles are determined by the toll lane sensors, not the transponder. My deduct account gets billed for 2 axles, and if I go through with the trailer it gets billed for 4.

I also use my only transponder in 5 different vehicles. All I need to do is record the plate numbers on the account webpage.

That may be true in PA but not all EZ pass participating states do that. Check before you tow out of state.

I used our EZ Pass last year in VA, MD, PA OH, and IN and my trailer was picked up every time according to my statements. It sits in my truck all the time and I commute around Balt and Wash and it works fine. Bottom-line for me is I don't worry about it.

Out of curiosity I jumped on the EZdriveMA, Massdot site and asked a rep using the chat feature.

I was told if I traveled through MA I needed do nothing different. The total number of axles would be detected and my PA account would be deducted accordingly. Perhaps if you're an MA resident they complicated it? I have towed through all the state's in EZ pass other than MA, RI, and ME, and never had to do anything different.

When I first got my trailer, I was told that I would need a separate transponder if I tow outside of MA. I do know that some places not only charge by the axle but by weight.

The mass Pike has removed all toll booths and now relies on either ez-drive ma(pass) or your plate no. to bill for tolls, the gantries they use are state of the art so I'm sure you'll get a bill reflecting your combine. With an EZ PASS or Drive(Ma) I believe there is a discount but that might be only Mass residents. The only problem I've had with EZPass is in Maine the sensors there dont appear to be as sensitive

You are correct. There is an EZ pass discount for MA residents. No discount for pay by plate.

We have also stayed at Smugglers Den. Very nice campground. No concrete pads but we had a clean and level site. Pool was nice and the showers were good too.
There is an IGA down the road that sells live lobster cheap and for an extra buck will steam it for you. I had lobster almost every day for lunch when we were there.

Our site at Smugglers Den with a concrete pad. Great site with plenty of room. Free bus service through Island Explorer to Bar Harbor.
