Adirondack Suggestions

Heading to Lake Placid and the Adirondacks next July. DW and I have been there several times, one of the reasons we are heading back. Beautiful. However, we will have around four extra days and would like to explore somewhere different after our LP stay. Any suggestions, other than Lake George which we have also been to a couple of times, of someplace to see or hang out at between Lake Placid and WNY State?

You could take Rt. 30 north to Malone then Rt. 37 west toward Messena. Stop at the Akwesasne Resort Casino (looks like they have RV parking & hook-ups), then continue on up to Robert Moses State Park and check out the nearby shipping locks on the St. Lawrence River.

You could go north as stated. There are several campgrounds around the Malone, Chateaugay area. High Falls Park just out side Chateaugay is nice. Then make a trip to Montreal it is only about 45 Miles from Chateaugay. Lots to see and do.

Great suggestions guys, thanks for the input. I think we are going to head to the Thousand Island area, somewhere around Alex Bay. My wife has never been there, I have several times when I had a boat, awesome to cruise alongside an international freighter!

We like the Great Sacandaga Lake area... Not as commercialized as the Lake George area which is more to our liking. The town of Northfield is a neat step back in time with several cool bars, restaurants and shops to visit. Saratoga Race track is a great way to spend a day and there is also a seasonal Rodeo in the area that is the real deal..

1000 Islands KOA. Be sure to take the boat tour out of Alexandria Bay.

Sherman12, I’m originally from the Gananoque area so if you need any tips on the Canadian side of the 1000 Islands don’t hesitate to ask!

I used to ride a Gold Wing regularly so we’ve been to Lake Placid and Lake George a few times. Beautiful area and great riding roads.

We followed the Lake Ontario shoreline and then the St. Lawrence River on our way to Acadia NP.
We stopped in Alexandria Bay and did the two country boat tour which included Boldt Castle ...a lot of fun. The restoration that is still underway is incredible as to magnitude / workmanship and attention to detail.
A short stop could also be made at Chimney Bluffs State Park. We did not know that NY had landscape like that.

Creedmore, we have done Chimney Bluffs, walking the hiking trail to the top, several times. Incredible place, like out of a Planet of The Apes movie or something. Great campground 5 miles away where we've stayed for Memorial Day weekend a few times is called Lake Bluff Campground. The rear transient part of the CG has large private campsites and the owners are super people. A mile away are a couple of restaurants with decks right on Sodus Bay. Fun weekend place to go.

Check out Cedar Point State Park if you are going toward Alex Bay. Campground is right on the seaway between A-Bay and Clayton. One of our favorites.

Or if you want to go more toward the southern part of the ADK's you could check out Speculator (Lewy Lake SP or Moffit Beach SP) or the Old Forge area (Old Forge Camping Resort or one of many state parks like Nick's Lake, 8th Lake, Golden Beach...)

Lots of great choices between WNY and the ADK's. Finger Lakes is another option...

Man, I remember going to the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome on a class trip when I was in first or second grade...and I’m 58! Returned some time in the 80s when visiting a friend in the area and still had a blast!

KMP44 thanks for the suggestion. I looked at Cedar Point, but booked a site at Keewaydin SP. Didn't want to do Wellesley, to big and crowded and Krings Point was already booked out. Finger Lakes region is almost like a second home to us. Our favorite is Keuka Lake SP followed by Sampson SP. Robert Tremain by Ithaca is a favorite for early November, typically our last outing of the season.

Thanks to all for the great suggestions. I'll favorite this thread as a reference for future Adirondack adventures.
