So funny you posted this. We are going to a wedding on Emerald Isle end of Sept. Had thought of pulling camper at one point, but because kids are in school and will be a short trip, we decided to fly. I just booked airfare flying into New Bern. I'm definitely going to check the area out while down there.

Historic new burn, charter fishing or head boat fishing, old fort at atlantic beach, aquarium between salter path and atlantic beach. Great local. Seafood restaurant in salter path, on sound side behind the church near the fish markets.

We are in Cape Hatteras, NC 8-30 (to) 9-4 staying @ a KOA, on the beach. As the crow flys it is about 40 miles from New Bern but actual driving would be much more. This campground has lots of great activities for children and very clean.

We are not regular visitor to beach locations, as we prefer the country / woods. We were scheduled to stay in PA this holiday weekend but the terrible weather / storms in PA and OH forced us to change our plans. It is a good thing as the weather has been GREAT hear in Cape Hatteras. Hope you have fun in New Bern.

Don't know if it's still there, or if it's still in operable condition, but on the drive from New Bern to Morehead City on Rt. US70 in the Croatan Nat'l Forest, was the original Ass-kicking machine. A must-see, and of course a must-have photo op.

The New Bern KOA is pretty nice, located on the river with a fishing pier. The town has lots of antique shops, specialty shops, and good places to eat. There's also a neat hardware store that will make you feel like you're back in the 50's. There's also a big house that is open for tours, but I don't remember its name.

Tryon Palace. It's a mansion built by Lord Tryon, one of the colonial British governors of the colony. It's been completely restored and is an exemplary period home from the 1700s.

The KOA in New Bern is the best CG in the area. Nice, clean with good size sites and fairly reasonable. We have kids in the area and have stayed there 6 or 7 times in the last couple of years. There is a nice waterfront downtown and several good restaurants. First weekend in October there is a big seafood festival in Morehead City, about 30 miles east, but worth the trip.
