Best Campgrounds Within Walking Distance Of The Beach On The Gulf

What are some of the better campgrounds within walking distance to the beach on the gulf? We're from northern AL and we have small children would like a place within a 6-8 hour drive. I have looked at the Gulf Shores State Park and Cajun Rv Park outside Biloxi, MS. Anyone stayed at either location before? Thanks

Last fall we stayed at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park, which is near Destin but is listed in the Trailer Life Directory as near Santa Rosa Beach, FL. We prefer state parks over commercial campgrounds, but were not happy with this one. It was an RV park that was upscale and (to us) expensive at $47 per night. The facilities were first class but it is over a mile from the beach. There's free tram service but it only runs once per hour during the off season.

We were happier at T.H. Stone Memorial St. Joseph Peninsula State Park, which is a 25 mile drive from Port St. Joe. The facilities were typical state park but it is on the beach. It cost $26 per night. Although it is wooded, be aware that it is on an unprotected penisula so you could be exposed to storms.

X3 for Top Sail. Gulf Shores about a mile from the beach. Henderson SP about 10 miles west of top sail in Destin is nice and about 200 yard walk to the beach.

Fort Pickens is a great campground, bay on one side beach on the other with few crowds.

Gulf shores is actually a great campground for kids, they have a good pool and splash pad. the downside is the beach is about a mile away but its a beatiful beach!

We stayed at Camp Gulf in Destin FL in Sept of 2011. You can literally camp on the edge of the beach. You can also camp off of the beach. The closer to the beach the more expensive it is. If you go to the site map CAMP GULF Campground - Beachfront RV Sites Destin, FL on this address we stayed at site #708 for reference. Walk 30 feet on you are on the beach. Don't quite know for sure if this is within your travel distance.

Our 3 favorites that probably meet your travel time requirements:

Camp Gulf........closest access to the beach but you will pay in price for this luxury, sites in rear have some shade
Henderson SP..next closest access to beach, all sites sunny and good scrub vegetation for privacy
Topsail SP........great wooded sites, furthest distance to beach access but area very private, away from tourist section

Overall, if we want to be in the middle of the action along the strip, Henderson is our choice. If we want quietness and away from tourist area with the kids, Topsail our choice.

Another one that is very nice is St. Joseph Peninsula State Park. Both of their two campgrounds are within about 100 yards from the beach. On some of their beaches, you can walk for miles and not see another person.

We stayed at Cajun RV park in November. It is right across from the beach, and it is nice. We enjoyed it. However, remember Biloxi beaches are not clear as Gulfshores/Orange Beach. It is way to close to the Mississippi River. We have reservations at Destin West in March, and it is across from the beach and they have a walkover to the beach so you dont have to cross traffic.

We stayed at Emerald Beach RV Park at Navarre Beach, about 20m W of Destin. There are sites that back right up to a nice beach they have on the intercoastal. Each beach site has a private deck. The gulf beach in just accross the causway and has miles of National Seashore unspoiled beachs and dunes.

Top Sail also has great bike trails if you are a bike rider.

Can someone answer this question for me. Are you allowed to take pets on the beach in any of these areas? I would like to visit the gulf but cannot find a place that allows pets so we always visit Huntington Beach, SC because my Jack Russell does love to romp on the beach and in the ocean. Anyone know of a gulf beach where pets are allowed. I have been told it is actually a state law in Florida that you cannot hav pets on a public beach. Thanks JT

I am sitting on the Galveston, TX beach as we speak and they do allow pets on the beach. I used to live in Miss, but didn't have a dog, so I can't really say. The FL beaches do not allow pets and they are very strict about it.

Silver Slipper Casino RV park says you can take dogs on the beach there. Haven't been there, but that is what the gal told me when I called awhile back. That's on the gulf in Mississippi.

Good to know thanks for the reply. I may make the trip one day but it is 800 miles as opposed to 600 to SC. What camping place do you recommend? ThanksJT

From what I understand the RV park is not very close to the casino. But again, I really don't know first hand.
