Best road to take to Stone Mountain GA

This summer we will be traveling from New Hampshire to Stone Mountain GA. I was looking for the best way to get there. If you use mapping software it takes me down I-85 and I have been told that this is not a safe way to go. Any travel information would be great. Thanks.

What's not safe about it? We are going there the end of March and we are planning on going down I 85. I know the Stone Mountain web site gives you alternate directions because most GPS units take you under a 12ft clearance bridge but that is at the end of the trip and easily routed around if need be. If you have a Garmin GPS you can go to navteq.com (they use these maps) and see how your unit will route you. Not a big deal, I'm used to the GPS doing some unusual routing and plan accordingly.

I guess it has a lot of truck traffic and a high rate of accidents

Maybe, I'm not really sure. I do travel I-81 between Wytheville, VA and Knoxville, TN and can tell you there is usually A LOT of traffic on that section also (if you are thinking of taking I-81 to I-40 to I-75 but Knoxville can be a bear in traffic). Other than that I guess you could go I-95 to I-20. I don't know how much better that would be as I'm not familiar with that route. Don't know if this helps or not. We are taking I-77 and picking up I-85 in Charlotte. Have fun and be safe.

We live off of I-85 and it is no worse than any other interstate these days. You could come down I-95, the take I-20 to Atlanta. But I-85 would be more direct.

I live in near Knoxville and work there. Traffic is not bad unless you are coming thu between 4-6 pm Monday - Friday. I81 thru TN is a normal highway, I take that road from Knoxville to Johnson City about once a month and never had a problem. Since they finished contstruction on I75 between Knoxville and Chattanooga you should have a easy stright shot down to Atlanta. Just be glad you are not going south of Atlanta that is a nightmare.

When are you going to Stone Mtn? We will be there the week of 4th of July.

We will be there about July 16, our daughter lives near Atlanta and she is due to have her first child, so my wife and I will be there for about 3 weeks to help out. Its gonna be real weird sleeping with a grandmother after that
