Best Route FL to DC

We will be traveling up I-95 from Florida to the NE this summer. We plan to stop in Jersey City and Liberty RV Park. Plan to run into Manhattan for the day. We will be pulling our 30 TT and parking there for 2 nights. My question is the best route. I am using Streets and Trips and and have restricted to mainly interstate and it has routed me as shown.

I am not familiar with the roads in the DC, Philadelphia area. Any recommendations that will be easy for a Florida boy in the big city getting from south of DC to Jersey City..

Looks fine- it's just temperamental for what time of day you come thru DC. Morning and afternoon rush hours are painful- you'll be in thick stop and go traffic. (I-95 and I-495) Depending on what overnight construction there is, you can get stuck in that. It's still the route I would take.

The trip up thru PA will be nice. Again, avoid the Baltimore beltway at rush hours (I-695). North of Baltimore to the PA line on I-83 will be thick on the evening rush hour.

Harrisburg, PA area will have some traffic, but unless there's an accident, it moves.

The other option is to get off of I-95 south of the city and go up 301. Some people love it, some people hate it. To me, it's a road with stop lights. I'll chance the interstate. If you do that, the bridge across the Potomac River from VA into MD is intense. 2 lanes and very tall!

Thanks ependydad, We should be approaching DC/Baltimore between 9 and 10AM and then Harrisburg around noon. Is 9AM still rush hour in DC. I know that is a good time to pass thru Atlanta but have never dealt with traffic in these areas.

Gheesh, in the DC area it's rush hour all day! Stay away from 495 & 95 as mentioned. Cut thru to I-81 above Richmond and enjoy the scenery. BTW, there's a great KOA in Maryland if that's a stopping point. It's the Hagerstown\Antitem KOA. Very scenic and clean. Reservations recommended.

Closer to 10 would be better. You'll also hit mid-day road work.

But, I still feel like I-81 is so far out of the way. You can ride 81 up to Harrisburg, though, too.

If your objective is to get from FL to NJ via the quickest route then I-95/495 is it. There will be traffic and lots of it, but be patient, take it easy and you can make it. We towed our fiver from DC toward Baltimore at 9:00 AM without any problems. Be prepared for construction delays, toll booths and some rude drivers. However if you have some extra time, a more scenic route, less traffic and headaches would be I-95 up to Richmond then I-64 over to I-81 then to I-78 into Jersey. Sure it's a longer route but you have a lot of options along the way.

A suggestion on a route----------

Dalford, I have traveled from Jacksonville to the northeast area several times. Depending how far north I go depends on the route. For the area you are going to. Just above Richmond, VA at mile marker 104, take highway 207 over to US-301 until it merges with US-50 east. At this time follow US-50/US301 east into Maryland. Stay on US-301N all the way up to I-95 way above the DC/Baltimore area. You have a toll bridge that crosses the Chesapeake Bay which is not very much. You do miss all the DC/ Baltimore traffic.

Good luck on your trip.

herk's directions make a good point - if you plan on taking I-95 past Baltimore, you must take the I-695 beltway. No propane is allowed in the Ft. McHenry tunnel (taking you under the harbor in Baltimore).

@Daisy's directions avoid all of that. The bridge he's talking about is the Delaware Memorial Bridge. I think it'll cost you a good $20+ to cross it with the truck and camper.
