Best route from Buffalo to Maryland near Washington

We are heading from Burlington, Ontario thru Buffalo to the Cheery Hill Park campground in Maryland near Washington. We have a 42ft 5ver so I am usually looking for the biggest highways to travel on. Mapquest suggests 2 routes almost the same time length..

1. Buffalo south along the hwy 219, thru St Mary's, onto 99 thru Altoona, then onto 70 to Fredrick and then onto 270 and a little on 470 into the park

2. Buffalo south east along 390, then onto 86 south, then onto I99, then US 15 all the way down to Williamsport, then onto 80 and 22 and 11 to Harrisburg and then 15 into the park

Any issues or problems on either route I should look out for?

Thanks Jeff

We are from the Western New York area and have traveled to the same destination.

Route #1: We have never gone this way. Not to say it is good or bad just have never done it. We have traveled the 219 south into Pennsylvania... it will go through small towns and be two lanes/hills south of Springville NY.

Route #2: We have traveled this exact route many times over the last 40 years. It is all main highways with the only precaution being there may be road construction in Pennsylvania…there is always road construction in Pennsylvania.

I would look at hitting I-79 South in NY and take it to I-80 East to around Bellfonte, PA, then I99 South to either Bedford, PA and hit the PA Turnpike East OR take Rt220 South out of Bedford all the way to Cumberland, MD and then hit I-68 East, which dumps into I-70 East at Hancock, MD. I've traveled the Beltway around D.C. MANY times and I'm not sure even I want to take my Class C down to Cherry Hill Park on I-495. I'm thinking I'd take the traffic lights and get over on US Rt1 and go down that way. So, from I-70 East, I would go to Exit 86 and take US Rt 29 South to MD Rt 100 East and hit US Rt 1. Might be a little longer, but on the nerves? So much more easier! I'll stop at traffic lights - those idiots on the Beltway show NO ONE any mercy!

Route 1 is a little better than 495 to get to Cherry Hill CG, but plan on not getting there between 6 and 10 AM or between 3 and 7 PM, both routes are heavily used. Been there a couple of times before. 15 south is the way we go all the time from Rochester to Florida.

Agreed on the rush hour(s) times! And, to be perfectly honest, weekends aren't all that much better. [emoji16]

I live in Buffalo and have a sister in law that lives in Arlington, we've done the drive many times. My favorite route is 90 to 79 to 76 to 70 to 270 to 495. All thruway and pretty easy going until you hit that 495 area, which is always a traffic jam mess.

Rt 15 will take you south from near Corning, NY, all the way down into Maryland. It's nicer than most of the Interstates. Very scenic. Just came down through there from Corning to Harrisburg on Monday and there was NO construction. Why go so far west as Altoona for no reason. 15 is a gorgeous route all the way down to Maryland.

Using the phrase road construction in PA is optimistic. If it was really construction then there would be an end to it. The "repaired" roads start to crumble just after the lines are painted.

To say there could be "road construction" is like saying you may encounter rain during your travels. Unless it's a huge project which will tie you up for hours, not much you can do about it. Is there a state where road construction does not take place during the summer months?

best route to cherryhill campground

Just made that trip 2 weeks ago. Wasaga Beach ontario to Cherry Hill campground. Crossed into the USA at Lewiston, took I90 south towards Erie PA onto I79. Then took the turnpike, toll road but it was worth it. Only traffic was nearing destination in MD. Used Rand McNally rv gps, good route.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations. We ended up going route #2, down hwy 15. The gps did not want to take us down any other route. Today we started out at 6:00am and pulled into Cherry Hill at around 4:00. The roads were not busy until we got into MD.

Yeah, if you can avoid the beltway, or DC in general as much as possible, all the better!
