Best route from Western Md to Williamsburg KOA then to Va Beach
We're heading out in a couple wks from Western Md (near Cumberland) and heading to Williamsburg VA (staying at KOA there) for a couple days, then moving on to VA beach (still deciding on campground). What is the best way to travel with a 35ft 5er? As the DW & co-pilot, I'm often the only 1 navigating maps. DH has no sense of direction & is a very stressed out/anxious driver, especially with 3 loud kids in the back.

See if I81 to I66 to 29 to 17 to I95 will work. Those roads are good to tow on and will keep you out of the majority of I95 traffic north of Fredericksburg.

From Cumberland, Take I68 to Hancock, MD and then 522 South to Winchester, VA.
Take the 37 bypass south around Winchester to I81 south.
Then follow Teamfour's directions above to get you onto
I95.
Take the I295 bypass around Richmond to I64 into Williamsburg.
All good roads for a 5th wheel.

When you leave Williamsburg you can take I64 south but NOT through the Hampton Roads Bridge tunnel if you are tall, going to VA Beach. Having a fifth wheel you probably are.
VDOTs help :
http://www.virginiadot.org/VDOT/Trav...le902_2210.pdf
Also if using a tunnel you may be required to stop and be inspected to ensure that your propane bottles are off, watch signs State Police will not play.

From Williamsburg take I64 East to the I664 cut off which will take you through the Monitor Merrimac tunnel. That route is not as congested as the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel. The Monitor Merrimac is a newer tunnel as is taller and wider than the HRBT.
I664 will connect you to I64 West into Virginia Beach.

So take 81S to 64E and hop on the Richmond Bypass (295) till it hooks back on to 64 east. That will bring you to the Williamsburg KOA.
From there you can continue directly on 64 to Va. Beach turning on 264 IF you are less than 13.5' which is the clearance in the Hampton Roads Tunnel. I go through this with my ClassA at 12.5' all the time with no issues and no inspections ever...though I suppose it could happen.
If you are over 13.5' you need to hit I664 toward Newport News and go through the Monitor/Merrimack Tunnel and will then bring you back onto I64 and you can hook up with I264 to Va Beach proper.
These are easy interstates and should be relatively stress free for driver & navigator!
There are only 2 campgrounds close in to the beach...KOA & TravL park...suggest you get on the phone if you want a spot at either.

First Landing State Park (formerly Seashore State Park) if you don't want the cost and crowd of a KOA or the TravLpark. Drawback to First Landing is a reservation is not site specific. Some sites are difficult for a Fiver. Book thru ReserveAmerica. If by chance you are eligible for access to military installations, Seamist RV park and campground on Dam Neck base is really nice.

Thank you everyone! All info is appreciated & very helpful.
Our Wildcat's height says 12'6" in the paperwork, but it is currently having vent covers installed, plus our truck rides high since DH put bigger tires on it. I think we'd feel more comfortable with the Monitor-Merrimack tunnel. We didn't realize they were diff heights.
As for KOA vs Holiday Travel park, I still can't decide. All reviews say HTP is loud & crazy until 2am. We'll be traveling with a 2, 11 & 14 yr old.

Most of the noise is from the Jets from Oceana Naval Air Station. When I talked to the KOA to make my reservations they told me about the jet noise.

Being from VAB we refer to it as the "sound of freedom".

Whenever I need to go to Winchester, it's mainly to Hancock and down US 522. Only thing I don't like is the slowdown through BS, WV. But, it's still better than going to H-town and catching I-81S.

HolidayTP has a super site area. The spots are paved and well spaced. The area has its own pool. If you go there, be sure to get one of these. They're worth the extra bucks.
Also, Holiday has a service road that leads to a general store/gas station at an intersection with a traffic light. This road connects to a bike path to the aquarium and downtown Va. Beach. Meaning, if you bike, you can shop, sightsee and go to the beach without getting back into your truck.
Don't tell your husband, but if he rides his bicycle south, he'll find Bone Shakers, a sports bar with lots of cold beer and TVs.

Probably too late to ask as we're heading down I- 64 S. We are going to 664 S & Monitor Merrimack tunnel. Do we then go to 264 (google maps says partial toll) or go to 64/17?

264 East takes you to Va. Beach.......take Gen Booth exit off 264 or stay on to the end until you reach Bird Neck Rd.
