Best route, Louisiana to Ohio

We are taking a trip in late September and we are having a hard time picking a route. Should we go through Memphis or Birmingham?

How long time wise do you have? If you have the time, go down The Natches Trace. Relaxing ride, plenty to see and I don't think you would regret it! Just my thoughts, been there done that.

That is on our wishlist of trips. This is going to be a short one for us as we have to be on a tight timeline.
We have to be there in 2 days and back home after a short 4 day stay.

About the same for us. Hoping 450 miles a day is not too bad.

Mmmmm. Good for you. We/I drove straight through and was miserable. It took me 18-19 hours. Stopping a lot for food and rests.

hey neighbor we came back from Cleveland to Louisville then to Louisiana it made it easier Kentucky is very pretty country skirted Memphis to Mississippi louisiana

Not sure where in Louisiana you are starting from, however, B'ham should not even be considered! Construction, congestion and rough as a washboard. And did I mention CONGESTION and rude drivers? Where in Ohio? Perhaps if you take the Memphis route and are heading east past Nashville you could take 840 at Dickson and bypass Nashville traffic. It will add about 30 or 40 miles but you will not have to fight Nashville. 840 rejoins I40 just west of Lebanon TN.

We are actually staying at Big Bone Lick State park and are leaving From Lafayette,LA. That was the other route we were considering so your description of the Birmingham way may have just swayed me to go through Memphis. I was already worried about Tuscaloosa as it will be a Saturday during football season. Thanks!

When you get to Memphis consider crossing over the river and catch I-55 north for about 86 miles to exit 14 in Missouri and go east on Highway "U" to interstate I-155 (short distance). You avoid 2 lane highways that way. 155 turns into US Hwy 51 which is 4 lane and take it North East then merge onto Purchase Pkwy just after you get into KY then I-69 (Western Ky Pkwy) to Elizabethtown, KY to pick up I-65 north to Louisville and then I-71 into Ohio. Use Google maps to check out the route. It may be a little further but you will miss traffic in Nashville and a lot of traffic on I-40.

Take a look at I 10 W to 55 N past Memphis to I 155. Turns into the Juliun M Caroll Purchase Pky. to I 24 South. Just before Eddyville Ky pick up the Western Ky Pky to Lexington Ky Pick up I 75 N and your there. NO big cities and as far as I know, no tolls.

Great minds think alike. Ha Ha Yah, I think that route would be a whole lot less traffic. Actually I prefer to take back roads and avoid Interstates as much a possible but then I am in no rush and like to see the countryside (fewer billboards).

We live pretty close to Big Bone. I would avoid Birmingham at all cost. I-65, Birmingham, worst Highway in America!

I got on the Natchez Trace north if Natchez a couple years ago pulling a fifth wheel. The road was so bad I got off at next exit. It bounced around bad and road was very narrow. Want to try it again in a car or my new class c.

We were on it the year the fed shut down. Road wasn't bad then but nothing you could see was closed and blocked. Want to get back again.

Thanks for all the great information. Looks like we are changing our route to Memphis and take the NO Big Cities route. This forum is great I will let you all know how it goes! Hate to press my luck but any recommendations on a place to stay just north of Memphis?

I am not familiar with anything north of Memphis but if you are going to go North on I-55 I would suggest Tom Sawyer Mississippi River RV Park in West Memphis, right on your way. I've never stayed there but it has great reviews, right on the bank of the Mississippi River.
