Camp Hatteras Campground & Resort
We are heading to Camp Hatteras in 2 days, with 9 days planned at the campground. This will be our first trip to OBX with our 3170DS towing our 4-dr Wrangler and I will be traveling over the bay bridge.
I'd love to hear about your recent trips, things to do, what to look for, and any general info.
We plan to take the jeep doors off, remove the top and get the off-road permit for some sight-seeing too.
What are your favorite spots to visit in OBX? Favorite watering holes and restaurants?
Thanks for the info......

Pretty obvious, but the Wright Bros museum is very good. Have fun. Far north end you can see the wild horses and your jeep will be handy.

You could take the ferry over to Ocracoke Island. Back Porch Restaurant is a great place to eat there. They have a website you can check to see if it's the type of food you're looking for.

Last time I was on OBX, the ORV permit was real cheap. $50 for a week. That's perfect if you like to fish from your jeep It's a great place to check out. On the extreme south end of the island right before the ferry to Okracoke, there's the 'Graveyard of the Atlantic'.

You can climb the stairs on the lighthouse.

Obviously, in Kitty Hawk, there's the Wright Brothers National Memorial. Being a pilot, it would have been sacrilegious if I didn't see the birthplace of aviation.

When up there on the northern end of rte 12, a great place for drinks and a meal especially for dinner watching the sun set is at Fish Bones restaurant in Duck. They have indoor and outdoor seating and is incredible!

x2 on ferry to Ocracoke Island. Also recommend the outdoor play, The Lost Colony, over in Manteo. Well worth the price of admission.
The Lost Colony
We were just at Camp Hatteras in June when Tropical Storm Andrea came up the coast. It's always windy at Camp Hatteras anyway, so you may not be able to use your awning unless you tie it down really good. Closest "real" grocery store is a Food Lion in Avon, a pretty good hike down highway 12. If you do catch a showing of The Lost Colony in Manteo, we had a great seafood dinner at a little place called Darrell's Restaurant, which I'd recommend too. Have a great trip!

Andy Griffith used to live around that area and would frequently be seen at 'The Lost Colony'.

Is The Weeping Radish Brewery still in Manteo? Wow, they had some fantastic brews and great food there. We never went to the OBX without hitting the Radish and getting a few growlers for the week!

Deep sea fishing. Just did it a few weeks ago and caught 274lbs of tuna!!!! Look up the Fin Galley. The head isn't the best but they sure know how to catch fish.

Don't know if you can still do it but we loved taking our truck on the beach in Okracoke. Get yourself a kite or two. We had a blast flying kites there. Also, I think it's Howard's Pub that is right across the street from the beach. Good food and good times. And x2 for the Wright brothers museum. You'll have fun no matter what you do.

If you enjoy seeing wildlife, alligator state park is great! You can canoe the river, or just drive the logging roads. We saw 5 black bear and it's also home to red wolves

Cape Hatteras
Where have you chosen to park your RV on Hatteras. DW and I were there three years ago, a few storms have hit since being there and part of the main highway was washed away for the second time. The ferry rid over for us and our 30FIS Sunnybrook TT was an experience that I will never ever do again, smaller camper would not be a problem. The winds were we stayed made life during the stay pretty bad. The only thing to do is mainly fish, sit on the beach and drive around. We were there on the 4th of July when the fireworks blew up killing some folks. Hope you have a better experience that we. The Lost Colony is a must see play, please take that in..
