We stayed at and liked St. John’s Island County Park Campground. I’d happily go back there.

I have stayed at the Charleston/Mount Pleasant KOA a couple times and really like it and the location.

I "think" ependydad means James Island County Park and that is my recommendation. It is exactly 12 minutes into the historic district of Charleston at 4:30 pm. (I made the trek 4 different days to pick up a college student at College of Charleston and brought him to the camper to eat dinner with us). It was nice, clean, has great bath houses, lots of trails for walking/biking, wonderful dog park and close to both Charleston and Folly Beach if you want to go to the ocean.

Thanks for the correction. I confused 2 stays in that ballpark area and should have confirmed with my 2016 spreadsheet.

+2 on James Island County Park campground. That is where the Charleston Festival Of Lights FROG Rally is held in December. We've been to it twice now and it is a very nice campground.

James Island County Park campground fills up very quickly. As a great backup campground Oak Plantation on Savannah Highway is a very convenient place for getting back and forth to the city. Much closer to downtown than the Mt Pleasant KOA.

James Island is one of our favorites. When we cannot stay there we have stayed at Oak Plantation. St James would be a 9.5. Oak Plantation is an 8.5.

If you try to get reservations for a different week at James Island County Park and you need bath houses, be sure to ask about their renovation. They shut down both bash houses at the end of the Holiday Festival Lights the first week of January for complete rehab, new HVAC, and other upgrades. I don't remember the expected completion date, but be sure to ask.

Oak Plantation is very good, and run by very friendly folks, but the traffic is awful if you're trying to get in or out with a left turn during heavy traffic. They've gotten pretty pricey, though. The website shows $66/night for 2018 before tax and any discounts. We use it when we're in Charleston and not doing a rally because it's less than a mile from our son and family's front door. We're going there tomorrow.

We will be in James Island the 3rd week in March. When I booked I was told the bath houses would still all be closed. Not a deal breaker as I rarely use them and got a nice discount on the price because of them being closed [emoji106]

We spent two nights (17 & 18 Feb) at the Mt. Pleasant KOA. We were there for a wedding at Patriots Point. It was a nice campground, conveniently located for us, and is VERY close to a shopping plaza with a WalMart and much more. It was also a relatively short trip across the Cooper River to go to downtown Charleston.

One tip - when leaving and wanting to go south on 17, as soon as you get outside the gate, take your first left to go around the back of the WalMart plaza and then turn right. You come out at a light so you don’t have to wait for a gap in the (potentially heavy) north and southbound traffic.

I have been a little further down at Foley Beach years ago and loved it.
