Campground recommendations for Southern Central -Southwestern PA, Western MD, or VA

Will be traveling home from CT the first week of July. We are already booked into Philpott Lake Va for July 4-7. We are looking for a place to camp July 1-4 that will be along our route. likely I-78/81 through PA. I'd like to travel about halfway to Philpott. We like state parks but those in PA seem to only have Elec and not W or S. I'd at least like E/W.
We have no kids so we avoid KOAs and places that really cater to the youngsters, we prefer more scenic setting, with at least a place to take a nature stroll or enjoy a lake or stream.
Any input would be greatly appreciated. We've been looking at state parks in MD, VA and PA and also the listing on the PA Campground Owner's Assoc site. but would love to hear from anyone who's actually stayed in a place.
Will probably avoid Gettysburg as it's likely to be a zoo with the reenactment at the battlefield. We were there last summer so have seen it anyway.

And I'd love a place that will at least let you drink a beer in the evening without fear of being asked to leave!
Thanks!
