Hands down, the best campground in St. Pete would be Fort De Soto, which is a Pinellas County park. The campground is not directly on the beach, but there are many sites with water access for kayaks or canoes. The beaches, including a dog beach, are only a five minute drive to some of the best beaches on the coast. There's also the historic fort which is fun to stomp around and has great views. You can see some pics in my album: Forest River Forums - dkb74's Album: 2013 Camping in our 2014 Rockwood Mini-Lite 2306 - Picture

Reservations are hard to get. They can be made 6 months in advance.

Other than that, all you will find are various RV parks and a KOA, all off the beach.

Thanks Darlene! We have looked at De Soto online. It looks very nice. Can't believe how expensive KOA's are. WOW

Thanks again!

That KOA by the VA in St. Pete is expensive. Fort Desoto is nice but you have to book way in advance.

We stayed at St. Pete Madeira beach KOA last year this time. The park was....ehh..at best. Only reason we chose it was because wifey's brother in Pinellas's Park was only 10 minutes away. This is an older park, and I think we'd try Desoto next time even tho it's farther.

Fort DeSoto

Fort DeSoto is a GREAT campground. Glad you got reservations. We live about an hour from there and it is one of our favorites. The park is huge and as mentioned has a wonderful beach that is very long. There are kayaks and canoes to rent as well as bikes. There are good eating places about 15 mins away. You will pass some of them on the way in. A lot of the sites are back in and you sit looking out over the bay. Most sites have vegetation between them so it is really kind of private. The place is very clean. Ohhhh and one last thing. The raccoons are legendary thieves. They are such masters that you will be sitting at the picnic table and they will grab food if you any more than a couple of feet from it. They also know how to open coolers.

Haha yes! Little buggers unzipped our tent (years ago), unzipped our cooler, ate all of our food and drank the kids' Capri Suns. WTH? LOL.

We're hoping so. We wanted to stay over Thanksgiving week to but no slots available for that week. But the week before is fine with us.

How far is it from Fort Desoto to Pinellas Park? My father lives in PP. I would like to stay fairly close so the KOA might be my only option but DeSoto sounds nice.

I don't know... I would guess about 1/2 an hour? It's about 15 minutes to get to the interstate from the park, but then an easy drive up 275 from there.

We are booked there for 4 days in September. Picked it cuz we will have our dog with us on this trip and love the idea that we can chill at the beach while he runs and plays with the other dogs. He is a very social Jack who loves to go go go! We are headed there after our 10 days in the keys, 3 at curry hammock and 7 at long key. Can't wait.
You mentioned some good restaurants near fort Desoto?

Keep in mind that to get to Fort De Soto, you have to take what is called the Pinellas Bayway to get there. It's about a 10-15 minute drive down off of 54th Ave. BUT, once you get to 54th Ave, it's a very short drive over to south St. Pete Beach. Lots of restaurant choices there, such as Crabby Bills.

Curry Hammock and Long Key!! Great choices!! We just got back from Curry Hammock last week.

It was just my husband and I, and since we have 3 kids, "as little as possible" was our agenda. However, you will see in the State Parks thread that we found a couple things of interest. You could try kite boarding if you are adventurous. We will kayak in shark and gator infested waters all day long, but will not be trying that! LOL.

When you go to the hiking trail north of US 1, across from Curry Hammock, you will come across an old quarry. We snorkeled and swam in that. Had the place to ourselves. But beware of the poisonous trees on the hiking trail.

Also check out Keys Fisheries in Marathon. Dog friendly, outdoor casual dining with yummy key lime pie. In biking distance (3 miles) is Island Fish Company for a little less casual dining.

We will try Long Key next time we go.

Poisonous trees, WHAT. We are northerners and don't have anything like that. What is a poisonous tree?

It doesn't say much about it. What happens if you touch it. Is it like a poison ivy reaction.
