Camping Destination 5-8Hrs from Southern Indiana?

We are looking for suggestions on a destination to spend a week or so at, in the next month or so. Would like to find a nice place to go besides our regular trip to Gatlinburg / Pigeon Forge areas in TN. Would like to find something about 5-8 hours away from Southern Indiana (We are just north of Louisville, Ky). Anyone have any favorites they would like to share? We have a 5yr old son, so anything with activities to keep him entertained would be a plus!

Thanks

I love red river gorge. Have reservations for labor day weekend. Lots or short hikes a 5 year old could do with lots of cool arches and rock formations.

Is that in the Natural Bridge area? Do you have a particular CG that you like?

exact same area. I have always rented a cabin. Bringing my camper this fall and staying at 4 guys camp ground, its new. looks good online. Most of the government park campgrounds in area do not have power.

Desoto Falls State Park in Alabama is really nice this time of year. Lots of hiking trails to secluded falls and plenty of nature. Desoto Falls and Little River Canyon Falls are close to each other. Also a beautiful ride along the canyon rim road.

Natural Tunnel State Park in Virginia. We are right at 5 hrs from Louisville.

Natural Tunnel State Park

It is a wonderful park just north of the TN state line in Virginia. It is within an hour of Cumberland Gap (day trip), lots of music in the area, wonderful large swimming pool with a water slide that a 5 year old would LOVE, two diving boards, lots of hiking trails, a chairlift down into the gorge where the "natural tunnel" is, some kids craft times, canoe and kayak trips, caving trips, hay rides, trips to the "Devil's Bathtub" (it is NOT warm) and so many other offerings.

5-8 Hr From Louisville area..

I'd go to the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina / Tennessee. I've been there many times.. .check out Blowing Rock, Little Switzerland, Cherokee, or many of the other areas... All are great, relaxing, lots of stuff to do and see. Beautiful mountains...

Shipshewana

Shipshewana, IN is a great place with Amish settlements, flea market, horseback riding, great bicycle trails, RV factory tours, great Amish food.

Have you looked West? Over around Branson, or maybe not even that far? Merriamac(sic)Cave State Park in Mo. Many good state parks on south Mo. Or over east, Dayton Ohio, National USAF Museum, (its free!) and so much more to see and do in that area.

We like Kentucky Horse Park campground just north of Lexington. Also, almost any Corps of Engineer and KOA campgrounds near Nashville, TN as well as Kentucky Lake, Land Between the Lakes and Lake Barkley near Paducah. Depending on what you're into, all of these can be destination campgrounds.

Agreed. We camped there several years ago and it was very nice. Our 4 kids enjoyed the hikes.

Maumee Bay in Ohio, Petit Jean Mountain in Arkansas, Unicoi State Park in Helen, Georgia, Fall Creek Falls in Tennessee, Wagon Trail Campground in Door County, WI, and either Paris Landing State Park, Kenlake State Park, or Lake Barkley State Parks in Kentucky Lake area, Lake Claiborne in Louisiana; these are my favorites that are in or just over your drive distance.

8.5 hours to Egg Harbor and all of Door County WI on lake Michigan...simply a spectactular area to visit for a week or so. Don't miss the short ferry to Washinton Island off the northeast tip of the county.
