Camping in North Conway , NH

We plan to be in North Conway, NH from Aug 26-30. What is your experience with camping in this region. What recommendations do you have and are ther CGs to stay away from.

Was probably 8 or so years ago, but DW and I tent camped here once: Cove Camping Area

Nice place. We rented a canoe spent the better part of an afternoon reading a book on a nearby island.

Not sure if you are from the area, but as for things to do:

1. The Kancamagus is a nice scenic ride
2. Once on the other side, Clark's Trading Post
3. Story Land, if you have young kids
4. Rent a tube and float down the Saco river
5. There's one of those highwire / zipline places in Ossipee, NH that looks fun
6. Take a drive up the Mt Washington Auto Road if a clear day

We were up thier a couple of years ago and stayed at the Glenn Ellis Family Campground and liked it a lot. It was rated one of the 10 best family campgrounds a few years ago.

Do the zip line and Mt. Washigton (the drive up is fun) No guard rails on the road when we went up.

Have fun!!!

We like the KOA's, and Twin Mountain KOA is very nice.

Clean, well maintained, and the owners are great....

We've camping in NH for 2 weeks mid Sept but staying over near Lincoln at the Lost River Valley campground...stayed there for 2 weeks last Sept too. Lots of great hiking in the area...many of them off the Kancamagus Hwy 112. In fact there's many nice White Mountain NF campgrounds along Hwy 112 between Conway and Lincoln but they don't offer any hook-ups.

We stayed at Eastern Slope CG in Conway, it was just ....ok. Not very well kept up. The owner uses a 'property management' company to run it. Probably won't stay there again.

That's the one I was thinking about staying. Thanks for the heads up. I camped at Beach campground several times in the past. Had an incident with the owner. He doused our fire one evening while our kids where roasting wieners. Didn't give us any warning. Been back since, but i do find that the cg can get very muddy if its wet. Never been able to get into Saco River Cg. Always booked up. I was hoping that there maybe a hidden gem close by that I was unaware of. I'm not sure of my arrival or departure time so I don't want to make reservations. Do you think that it will be busy. I think schools are open by then and maybe the camping season is winding down.

I would think that anytime after next week the schedule would lighten up as the kids go back to school. Keep in mind, between the foliage and the first week of Oct is usually the Fryeburg Fair, so it gets busier then.

One of our more memorable New England campsites was in Vermont, back in the '80s. My mother (who was in her '80s at the time, went with us as we toured Quebec, came down into New England. My mom had been a great admirer of Calvin Coolidge, and wanted to visit Plymouth Notch, NH. So, off we went. We found the only campsite in the area, an open field with no hookups. Guy who collected our money ($4 as I recall) was typical vermonter, with the expressions and all. Rained cats and dogs overnight, and we had to stay an extra day before we could get enough traction to pull out! (But at least the guy didn't show back up to collect!)
