Glad you chimed in on the better route, I just wasn't sure how 30 was in that area as I have never been on it west of Gettysburg and did not want to send someone on a route they shouldn't be on, thanks again

If my map right looks like exit 201 for hiway 997. Later RJD

Yep, you can do that. Come down past Letterkenny Army Depot. There was a bridge closure on that route last summer but it is open now. Route 696 is another southerly option to route 30.

Also getting off the T-pike at Willow Hill (Exit 189) and going south on SR 75 isn't a bad drive into Fort Louden. You back track ever so slightly west but the road is good through Fannettsburg and Metal down to Route 30. This is my preferred route. Less traffic and less little burgs to go through.

Yep, exit 201 (no exit 200) for PA997. Can't miss it as they say, it's just a minute or two out of the Blue Mountain Tunnel (the second of two right together). Right turn out of the toll booth. Tiny exit, rarely any traffic. Follow the signs. T-intersection at US30 is hard to miss too. Hang a left.

US30 east out of Breezewood up, over, and down Sidling Hill is placarded with a warning for trucks and is only fun in a sports car (and only if your passenger has been blindfolded and sedated). I've been over it several times but only when other options were not available.

There is a challenge getting thru the square in "the borough" (Gettysburg). Typical south central PA village width streets with lots of cars coupled with tourists and college kids. But semis go through all day long.

East of Fort Loudon to G'burg is fine other than thru Chambersburg but how ya getting to Fort Loudon? US522 from Ft Littleton? Still some tight grades. Hence my preference for good olde PA997.

Is all this still just to save tolls?

Yes.

Other than some congestion (at times, mostly weekends) in Chambersburg, the route is good.

The tough terrain on 30 is west of Fort Louden.

At Fort Louden you have basically made it off of the Allegheny mountains and it's flat from there going east.

Route 30 is the original Coast to Coast “highway”, created in the infancy of auto travel. O follows the contours of the land and is very tight, curvy, and hilly coming off the mountain. I would definitely recommend getting on 30 after you’re off the mountain.
