Cape May to Mystic Ct; best way around NYC

Traveling I-95 from southern New Jersey to Mystic, Ct. Anyone know the best way through, or around New York City (and New Jersey?)? I was looking at I-95 to I-287 up to Tappanzee Bridge, then back over to I-95. Any better suggestions?
Really not interested in tackling George Washington Bridge with a TT!

That is my preference. GSP has height restrictions above mile marker 130. The Tappenzee can get jammed up on weekends.

No easy way from where you are coming from unless you drive all the way up north and catch Rt84 to Rt9 in CT. that brings you back to exit 69 in CT on RT95. Its way out of your way but I do everything I can to avoid GWB and Tappanzee bridge even without towing a trailer!
What campground are you staying at in Mystic?

Tappan zee to 95 is about 10 miles. You come in to 95 last exit in ny before CT. I prefer that route over 84. Lots of construction near Waterbury CT on 84.

We use thr Tapanzee Bridge as well when heading to Cape Cod. Can TT be on the GSP that high up? I thought at some point they restricted what could be on it.

No problem with using GSP ( except for the pricey tolls) we rode the entire length with a 37 foot MH and toad. Last time through the area took 287 north and I thought it was a nicer drive and only 10-15 miles further than the parkway. There are a few overpasses on parkway that have lower clearance on either end so near those just stay in center lane

I drive this just about every month. Get on 287 from NJ turnpike. Go over Tapenzee Bridge. It’s new and traffic moves good now except for rush hour. On to Rt95 north....to Mystic. A bit longer than some other routes suggested, but much less traffic and shorter in time.

Thanks for the helpful replies. Helps confirm my impression that TappanZee would be a better option . We are heading for Mystic KOA for a few days, but part of a longer itinerary that goes to Plymouth, Ma, Bar Harbor, and Niagara Falls. We actually live in Easton, pa, but are connecting with friends who will come up from southern NJ.

GW cost us $28 nb (free sb) with the extra two axles last time we went across it. Though we love Mystic (just spent 5 days there) it might be worth skipping it and heading to MA by going around 95.

Watching this thread. We are going to Maine and had planned to take the GSP to 287 to 87 to 84 and cross at Newburgh. Would it be better to take 287 to 684 to 84?

If you’re coming from Easton, I would jump on 78 east to 287 north and meet your friends someplace just before the Tappan Z.

287 is going to be much more direct then the parkway, you’ll avoid the cost of the tolls and all the slowing down and speeding back up which sucks when towing...
