Stayed for a week one of cleanest campgrounds I have ever stayed at not on the beach but very close to Light house and a lot of exits for beach access if fishing and restaurants. We enjoyed it more than than Camp Hatteras at waves more shielded from the wind and sand actually keep awning out

Cape woods in Buxton NC

My wife and I have been to cape woods (covered with ants), frisco woods (really enjoyed this one), and hatteras sands which we also really like. Especially since it was finally bought by someone who is making all the repairs it's needed. Glad you had a good time. The ant issue was posted at the front desk and may have been due to the time of year we went. May have to check them out again. Other than the ants it seemed like a nice place.

Didn't have any ant problems had a very bad rainstorm but no standing water grassy not sandy biggest thing for me was it is sheltered from the wind and could use awning which is impossible at Camp Hatteras only thing it cost me 200$ for 5 days Camp Hatteras was 50$ but was close for family reunion

That's good to hear. Like I said. May have been time of year I was there. But has been about ten years since I've been there. Like I said before. We usually go to hatteras sands or frisco woods. I know what you mean about the awning. Down there you normally can't have it out. I've seen many awnings shredded by the wind. We'll have to check it out next time we are down in the OBX.

Do any of these mentioned beach access CG's have shade? I would love to camp near the beach, but need the shade for my dogs as I don't have an awning.

Don't know about Cape Woods, but Frisco has some sites with shade although it is not on the beach; it's on the "sound" side of NC -12

Is swimming in the sound possible or is it mucky mud?

We saw lots of people on jet skis and kite-boards, etc so I would assume the water is fine although we don't do the swimming thing. If you plan to take the ferry, be sure to check the schedule and make reservations in advance for the Cedar Island Ocracoke ferry.

There is definitely shade at frisco woods. You can get into the water. In order to swim though you'd have to go out pretty far. But for the little ones it would be fine. Have you thought about a portable canopy for shade? I've seen them on sale for under $100. We usually take one for when we are out on the beach.
