77 to 70 will be your easiest route and is only about 20 minutes longer than taking 35 or 33. It also depends on what part of Columbus you are going to. I travel from Dayton to Greensboro/Charlotte via rt 35 and it's not a bad drive at all. A couple of climbs and descents on 77 but nothing you shouldn't be able to easily handle.

I just came back from Columbus going that way. 35 to 77. All good roads. A few steep up and down sections, especially from Wythville VA crossing into NC ( I think bit was 5% downhill for 7 miles)

I can say from Charlotte to Wytheville, Va I-77 is a good road to ride on. Watch around Statesville as the I-40 and I-77 connection/interchange is being worked on and all around there. I-77 at Fancy Gap, VA mountain is an easy hill to climb. but once I get to Wytheville I go I-81S to Knoxville. So that's as far as I can help you.

If you're going north side I would come in in the east side rather than from the south.

If you have a chance...we just came back from Columbus...we stayed 30 miles East at Buckeye Lake...the KOA was complete and the bicycling around the lake was great...and Columbus impressed us from new MEX restaurants to Heritage Antique Mall exit #112 ....

Just a traffic tip if you have any leeway in your schedule. We hit terrible traffic in Columbus on our way up on a weekday last spring. Coming back through on a Sunday morning was clear sailing, very little traffic. Of course, we can't always be so selective about our travel days.

I77 is a good road just watch for fog leaving NC into VA in the Fancy Gap area. MM1-MM9 is a hazardous area at times with many accidents.

Why ??? Do not think the Hurricane is going to affect the I77 area at all (We live an hour east near the NC / VA line north of Greensboro and are only expecting a possible stray shower)

. .......The other thing is if going the Labor Day weekend, a million extra people will be in the Hillsville VA area MM14 so more traffic possible on I77 the huge town wide Flea Market is this weekend.

Update: made the trip fine, however, Georgia's dirt roads are smoother than I-77 and HWY 33. Returned on I-70 to I-77. Hwy 33 route is better but rough.
