Colonial Williamsburg - Thanksgiving 2015

We are getting ready to lock in our plans for a trip this Thanksgiving to Williamsburg, VA. Looking at staying either at the KAO or American Heritage Parks. We have a 12 year old son so KOA has more activities, but American Heritage looks nice too.

Looks like this is a big deal in Williamsburg. Has anyone been there for Thanksgiving?

We live close by, and they really do it up in Williamsburg. Lots of decorations, Jamestown is close by also. You will not have a lack of things to do, our weather here will be cool but not usually cold. I can't be any help on the campgrounds.

X2 on American Heritage, a nice clean park, although not a lot of activities for kids but there is plenty to see in the area.

X3 on American Heritage. The front desk was friendly and responsive. Great pull through spaces. Not far from Williamsburg sites. Can not speak to the KOA facilities.

Colonial Williamsburg - Thanksgiving 2015

Only negative to American Heritage is the "Parking Nazi" on the golf cart that continually tells me where to not park. Actually, I've come to see him as a form of entertainment now.
My first encounter occurred when he told me that I could not park my truck on my site because it was too large. He then informed me to park it on the grass across the road. Being as I do not live very far from the site, I carried my truck home to go get my much smaller '66 Plymouth. Needless to say, when I rumbled through the park with the cam hitting a real nice lope, he came over to tell me that the park was for guest only. He was totally disgusted when he noticed my parking pass. This year when I returned, I set up and parked exactly where he had instructed me to park the previous year. Immediately, he came over to tell me that I could not park there. I informed him that I had previously been instructed to park my truck there. He quickly said that it was not by him. I just smiled and said I couldn't remember exactly who it was other than some old geezer on a golf cart. The park is very nice so long as you do not allow Herman Goering to ruin your stay. Just take him in stride and enjoy yourself.

I used to live there also for 10 years while stationed at Fort Eustis, the area is really nice. Make sure you do Captain George's Seafood Buffet.

Never stayed at Williamsburg KOA so I can't comment about that CG. Did stay at American Heritage for a week back in summer of 2006. Liked it a lot. They kept the grounds very attractive and well maintained. Very quiet and relaxing CG. It's a drive to attractions, but this park is easily accessible to I64.

I stayed in the KOA 5-6 years ago, it was really nice and well maintained, lots of activities there. Did the Jamestown experience as well as a day at Busch Gardens.

Have not stayed there but stay in KOA all across U.S.. Have not been in a bad one. Many activities for kids and usually a lot of kids around to play with.

We stayed at the KOA last year and really enjoyed it. Lots for kids to do. Not much of a drive to get to the Williamsburg center where you can grab a shuttle bus to the town and you can jump on and off to visit different parts of the city. I think it was $3 per person for seniors. One thing we did not do is pay the $50 or so $ apiece for the town tour as one can walk it. You are limited to being able to go in certain building tho but then you get the all day talk show. I don't think we missed much.

Consider going to James town also and be sure to take the ferry boat across the James river it's free. You can drive around on the other side and then return back by ferry or you can drive about 70 miles to get back around to Williamsburg.

Stayed at American Heritage last year for Thanksgiving and did Williamsburg/Yorktown/Jamestown. Had a blast... To be honest DD's did not need much entertainment at the CG due to the abundance of things to see and do in Williamsburg...

We had our turkey in one of the restaurants in the Revolutionary city... you will need reservations... was awesome... kids decided to dress up and all...

Also be sure to play REVQUEST. It is free with your admission to Williamsburg and will give you a different tour of the city from what you might have seen already.... need to start around 9:00am in order to complete it...perfect for a 11 yr old...

You will definitely need to make reservations for American Heritage soon... was 100% full last year for thanksgiving week.

PM with any other questions if I can help

Excellent destination

Haven't camped at either in that area since we weren't on an RV trip when we went but I will say it was one of the best ideas we've ever had as a travel destination. Very unique opportunity to see American history played out in real time. Whole family found it fascinating and very enjoyable. Hope to go back soon.

Could someone post a link to the american heritage cg? I did a yahoo search and could not locate it. I saw something called the heritage but was not sure if that was it.

Thanks,

Vin.

You will love Williamsburg. I have lived here for 30 years and I am still in awe. Be sure to visit all historic areas. Best night tour is the Original Ghost Of Williamsburg. You will love it.
