Delaware Campgrounds?

Anyone have any experience with camping in DE? My buddies and I do a yearly motorcycle trip to Dewey Beach in July, but the hotel pricing is getting out of hand. Anyone camped anywhere near Dewey, Rehobeth, etc? I'm willing to sacrifice and leave the bike at home to be the guy who tows the TT down instead with what rooms in Dewey are going for...

I do, I used to camp down there alot and lived down there for several years. I still go camping down there. There's holly lake on RT 24 which is a nice place, Big Oaks up RT across from Mcd's, there is also one a little further down by the enterance of Rehoboth Beach but I forget the name of it. Turn right at the water slide instead of left for going to the beach.

Absolutely the best place for the region IMHO is Delaware Seashore Statepark. They offer full hookup as well as a few tent spaces. They even allow one tent as well as an RV per site. We've stayed there the last four years and have booked our "beach week" already for this year. Its at the inlet by the bridge, so very close to Dewey and Bethany as well as Rehoboth and not far from OC MD either. The pads are paved but everything else is pretty much sand, so I hope you have an outdoor shower to rinse off before going inside. The other thing is this is highly popular for both fishermen and beach goer. We load up our wagon and walk to the beach about a five to ten minute walk. No trees or pretty flowers...but its the beach!

Another place to try is in Dagsboro, just 2 or 3 miles west of the Totem pole in Rehoboth beach. Clean place, pool, store and all that stuff! Its called Jim's Hideaway, very shady and wooded camp area, full or partial hook ups and the staff are totally laid back....nice place.

That Delaware Seashore SP is what I was checking out the other day. It looks beautiful and seems like a great location between Dewey and OC. The only downer is that their website says they don't allow campfires in that park. Bummer. Might have to check some of these places when I'm down there for my bike weekend this summer. Thanks, all.

True they don't allow campfires, but you can have a charcoal grill...not quite the same I know. You can't beat being able to walk to the beach though.

This past weekend was my bike weekend in Dewey, and I was able to stop in for a quick scouting mission at the Delaware Seashore SP. So just to give everyone the follow-up...the CG is right next to the Indian River inlet, so if you're a fisherman or boater in general, its a good spot. It's also right in the shadow of the new Rt. 1 bridge, which is a structural and engineering masterpiece if you're into such things, but it does sort of dominate the view. It's a fairly close walk to the beach (someone said 5-10 min above) but you'll be driving anywhere else. The thing I really didn't like was that the sites are really jammed together and there's not a tree in the place--it's a large field with nice paved roads and pads but you're pretty much right on top of your neighbor-it reminds me of tailgating at a football game. Plus the burn ban is still in effect. So I figured I'd just give everyone the updated skinny. Oh, and the summer months book up way in advance, but after Labor Day you can get sites. Thanks again to everyone for the input!

all the above campgrounds are great, but I would throw in homestead campground, its about 10 minutes from the grottos at the 5 points. very well maintaned, super nice staff and great sites! We stay there several times a year, and you dont get all the traffic!

About a month ago we spent 4 days at Cape Henlopen State Park. We're pretty new to the camping scene, not much to compare it to yet, but overall I was very impressed...large sites, clean, plenty of shade from pine trees, ~15 min walk to the beach, WWII Fort Miles sights to check out, quick drive to Lewes or Rehoboth, drive your car/truck onto the ferry for a day-trip to Cape May NJ.

Here's a mini thread of our trip....

If you are military, you can stay at the DE NG Training Center, no tents or campfires & you need to have reservations. We will be there Tuesday-Friday.

Delaware Seashore State park was our favorite back when you could camp right on the Indian River. Last year it still had equipment parked there for the bridge that has been rebuilt 2X.
