East Coast trip in 2016

We're planning to do an East coast trip leaving from SC going up thru NYC then following the coast up to Bar Harbor. Then cross over to Canada to the Falls, back down they Pittsburgh and home to SC. We don't know how many days we will be at each place, so what do you do about reservations? Do you find you have to have a strict itinerary? I know NYC will have to be fixed dates at Liberty Harbor, but not sure about the rest. Anyone else done a coastal trip?

DW insists on a fixed itinerary and all stops pre-booked, but I could be more flexible. We're still working so we don't have the flexibility that we could have if retired.

Just put the app RVparky in your phone and never be without a place to stay. It has all campgrounds, FJ/pilot, cracker barrels, walmarts and more, makes traveling without a set schedule fantastic. Also google it on your computer. Best thing I have found so far.

We have very few RV parks here and through the summer reservations are hard to get. I would prebook to avoid disappointment.

Yikes 40footer thru NYC WOW. X2 on RVparky for on the fly and scheduled sites. I agree on making reservations for your size rig. Wassamki and Baileys around Portland,me have bigger sites and Narrows2 ,Timberland and Bar Harbor CG near Acadia. I travel Coastal 1 to Acadia find the turnpike boring. But in the summer it'll be a bit slow and Rockport and Camden might be a little difficult to get thru. Good luck

Sounds like a nice trip. When we travel, I usually have several options depending on how long DH wants to drive. Make sure you stop off at Pymatuning on your way back south! I highly recommend Bayshore Family Campground on the OH side.

We did a trip summer 2015 really similar to yours. However we started from Texas. We hit Pittsburgh, Niagara, Buffalo, Philly, Boston, DC, the Cape, NYC, etc.

Here's a link to our google map. I'm not sure exactly how much is included in the map links. Mostly RV Parks, but also some side attractions...mostly record stores. Click on any of the links for links to RV Parks. I scoured the net and asked questions for about 6 months before we left.

GOOD LUCK

Two months ago, we completed a 5 week trip backwards from what you just described. We hit Niagara Falls, then NH, and ME without going into Canada except for a few trips from our initial base camp at Niagara Falls. From ME we went south for a sort of historical trip, i.e. Boston Harbor, Plymouth Rock, NYC, Wash DC and Colonial Williamsburg & Jamestown Colony. (Most northern campgrounds start closing Oct 15.) On our return, we had to stop in Hershey PA to put out our "chocolate low-level warning light". All this time, we never made a reservation until the day before since we didn't want to be bound by a fixed itinerary. (We're in a Class A with a toad, so we don't mind parking a ways out and then driving into the places to be visited.) Since we homeschool our kids, we have the liberty of going when everyone else's kids are in school...makes a trip more delightful and relaxing in many ways! Have fun.

Things have changed in last few years. Campgrounds here are now frequently FULL. With a rig the size of yours you'll definitely want reservations. Plan for a few lay-over days -- you'll like it here better than you think (if it's not foggy or rainy). Be prepared for any kind of weather and have a great trip.

I wouldn't go anywhere near NYC without my 5'er. I-95 in that area scares me to death! LOL We drove it once, and never again! Yep, I'm a big baby. LOL

I wasn't sure when you were traveling, but I also agree with the statement regarding campgrounds closing. Almost everything here in New England is closed from 10/31 until late April or May.

Good luck with your trip. It sounds awesome! I would love to do something like that, but we are restricted to weekends only because of hubby's work.

For your route through Canada, keep in mind that most of our Provincial Parks are booked up as soon as they can be reserved - 5 months in advance. KOAs are easier to get a spot last minute but no guarantees.

We stayed in Liberty Harbor RV park across from New York. Drove a 351DS pulling a Honda CRV we had at the time. There was no problem. Just check navigation going in. However it was fun seeing all the faces watching us driving through neighborhoods. All lights, powerlines, bridges, etc. were fine. The park is a parking lot though in all senses of the word. Try to get an end spot. Gives you a little more room. Otherwise you will packed and stacked, but plenty of room for the slides.

We left the Richmond, VA area this past Tuesday heading south. Since we are retired we are taking our time to North Fort Myers, FL to Upriver RV Resort. We spent Tuesday night at Pedro's Campground at South of the Boarder. We spent Wednesday night at Savannah South KOA in Georgia. We are spending tonight at Three Flags RV Resort in Wildwood, Fl.

This is our longest trip so far. We will leave for Upriver tomorrow morning which is about 183 miles south of here. Going to spend two months there.

When are you traveling?

We left SC mid-May this year and spent more than two weeks going up the east coast to Nova Scotia. We only made reservations for the three day Memorial Day weekend. We seldom knew where we would stay when we left each day, but we would sometimes call ahead early in the afternoon once we picked a stopping point. We never had a problem. Campsite availability may be tighter once school is out.

We did a similar trip this past Fall. Left Chattanooga, TN on the Tuesday after Labor Day. We didn't want to drive more than 4 hours each day (& some turned out longer because of traffic and rain). First night was in Wytheville, VA at the KOA, second in Broadway, VA at the KOA. Our original itinerary took us right through the Bronx - we changed directions as we were 2-40 footers with toads and didn't want to fool with the traffic through NYC - and once you get there, you'll see what I mean. We stopped in Florida, New York and found Orange County Choppers were only about 10 minutes from the Black Bear Campground there. We spent a lot of 1-nighters until we got to Rhode Island where we were there for 3 nights (wanted to tour the mansions in Newport). From there we traveled to Portland, Me for 3 mighty before heads no to Bar Harbor. We stayed in the Narrows 2 and it was just an 'okay' campground - nothing special - but the KOA there had you packed in like sardines (ugh). From there we traveled to New Hampshire and rode the Cog Railway up Mt. Washington - 2 nights there. Then on to Vermont (Ben & Jerry's factory) before heading to Lake Placid, NY for a week. Rode the Lake Champlain Ferry both from Vermont & New York - wow! Then we started working our way back down South, spending a week in the Pocono's where we took the shuttle bus into NYC and took a Grayline tour once we arrived. Then spent a week in Lancaster, PA and then headed home. 3600 miles in 7 weeks. We made reservations a year in advance and were glad we did. If you'd like a list of the campgrounds we stayed in, let me know and I'll e-mail them to you. It's a great trip and we loved every single minute of it!

Read my post #13, 2nd paragraph, here about my bad experience at Liberty Harbor in 2001:

Hopefully your experience will be better than mine.

You don't say when you are going? Reservations will be a must for any holidays. In Jersey weekends will probably require them also. You might like this park:

Shady Pines RV Resort in New Jersey | Carefree RV Resorts

It is 5 minutes from an 8 mile loop out into the ocean, great for taking bird photos! Ten to fifteen from AC if you are into that type of thing also.

Keep in mind not many year round cg as you come north.
