Eastern Shore VA

Has anyone been to the Eastern Shore area of VA? We'll be camping at Thousand Trails VA Landing for 5 days in April. I'd love to partake of some fresh seafood and see some of the local sites. Any suggestions or recommendations? Thanks!

Va Landing is nice but very far from anything, I am sure you can find what you want but be prepared to drive a bit to get there. We never left the campground as all our boys wanted to do was crab, clam and fish, this was a great place for it.

LOL dblr. I remember the days of camping with our kids. Now it's just the two of us, so we are more mobile.

The Island House in Wachapreague is close and one of the best places on the shore. Exmore Diner isn't bad either. Chincoteague is about an hour north an there are several good places there. Bill's Seafood and Don's Seafood are two of my favorites. Also Sugarbakers Bakery has killer sweet stuff that I shouldn't eat if you know what I mean... Have fun and enjoy.

Watch your speed on Rt 13 around Exmore. It's become quite a little speed trap. The Town Police use stationary radar on a fairly regular basis.

Island House - x2! BJ, the owner, runs a tight ship. This would be THE place I'd steer you to and where we go each time we stay at that TT CG.

I will also second Bill's Prime for surf and turf/raw bar, but will suggest you steer clear of Don's! I've spent time all over, so slow service doesn't chaff me like others, but your service there is always slow. However, I will not tolerate improperly prepared seafood especially if we're talking spoiled oysters!

Sugarbakers is just evil and I cannot resist the sticky buns, and they excuse the often lousy attitude behind the counter. Skip their coffee unless you'll drink anything called coffee.

When at Virginia Landing, we tend to just be R&Ring and it's a place for it! If you like fishing, enough said. There's the little railroad museum to check out, and kayaks can be rented at Southeast Expeditions. You might want to check out Tangier Island too. There are tours and you can rent bikes (golf carts I think too) to explore the completely crabbing-oriented island. Check out Four Brothers Crab House and Ice Cream - all I need to say!

x2 on Bills Seafood. Be aware that you may not take any pet on Chincoteague Island. Had to turn around because we had our lab with us. Camped at Kiptopeke State Park for 3 or 4 days. It was okay, but I would stay at Cherrystone park next time, especially offseason when it is not crowded. It's much less expensive offseason than Kiptopeke and they have waterfront sites. We took a detour to see NASA's Wallop's Island launch facility. Can't really see the launch pad where that rocket exploded last year, but it was pretty neat. We also camped at First Landing State Park on the south end of The Chesapeake bay Bridge Tunnel in Virginia Beach. I'll go back there without a doubt. Right on the beach behind the dunes, view of bay Bridge Tunnel. Walk down to beach in front of Fort Story, outside the Park and the dog could run wild. Just drive around the eastern shore. It's a time capsule.

Technically (not nitpicking) you can have a dog on Chincoteague you just can't take it in the National Wildlife Refuge area.
