Fl Gulf coast camping

We want to camp in Feb or first of March but have heard that the bugs are terrible in the state parks on the Fl gulf coast.. How is Top Sail,Henderson Beach,St. Andrews? Is the bug situation better on the Atlantic ocean side? Looked at Skidaway island state park.

meg, the bugs aren't "bad" that time of the year. They are around, but if you want warm winter weather, then the bugs will go along with that.

Here are our favorites in order that we try to stay: TopSail, Henderson Beach, Fort Pickens, Gulf Shores SP, then St Andrews SP.

We have also been to Skidaway, it is a very nice quite and rustic sites. We loved it and will stay there again.

Also if you stay in the panhandle of Fl or south AL in Feb/Mar it could be quite cool and windy with a water temp in the mid 60s.

Good luck

Its too cold for bugs at that time of the year. You'll be fine, if you can find a spot.

Fl Gulf coast camping

We are crazy about the Destin area and we love, love Destin West RV resort. It's close to Destin and all the fabulous dining venues and things to do, but just west of town past huge white sand dunes. It's on the Bay Side, but you have beach privileges at the hotel across the street on the Gulf. And it's right next to a fishing pier. Love it! Bugs? We've been in April and November and had no bugs at all. Sat outside in the evenings and never had a bug.

Do any of those have 50 amp service? Checking them out for Jan/Feb time frame and understand that the weather won't be warm. Sounds like you know the territory well. If I can pick your brain...
1. If I'm traveling on a flex schedule for just a few days in each place...is it impossible to get last minute spots at that time of year in those areas?
2. Given the time of year...beach is nice...but not critical. Would prefer to be within just a few miles of easy scootering of shops, restaurants, movies etc. Would you have a spot you'd recommend as nice...but close to civilization? Panhandle FL or AL are both fine...hope to spend some time in both states .
Thanks in advance for any thoughts you have!

We just Thanksgiving week at Henderson Beach State Park and loved it. This will be a repeat trip. Walmart is across the street and everything is convenient.

Check out the Port St. Joe area , Several camp grounds , state park and Cape SanBlas...... this area is where we spend the winter(actually Howard Creek)just north of St. joe----------in the spring we head out to Red Lodge Mt. to campwork at the KOA there.........kinda had to hold up for the last couple of days because of the rain , but temps have been hi 60s to 70

1. If I'm traveling on a flex schedule for just a few days in each place...is it impossible to get last minute spots at that time of year in those areas? It's going to be tough, better start looking at reserve America now. If it's for 1 or 2 nights during the week you may not have any problems.

Would prefer to be within just a few miles of easy scootering of shops, restaurants, movies etc. We love Top Sail. 5 miles to Destin, 30 mikes to Panama City. We like Destin. Good luck and enjoy your trip. Feel free to ask any questions I haven't answered.
